If you have a passably Arab outfit, wear it and say you are Scheherezade from the Thousand Nights and a Night. That's one of the great works of all literature of all time. I have a four-volume translation by Powrys Mathers that is my most precious book. You'll want to cover the lower hlaf of your face with a (preferably diaphonous) shawl of some sort.

I'm glad you like the suggestion. In my opinion, the 1001 Nights is lamentably overlooked in "modern" teaching; if students are exposed to it at all, it is as an extremely expurgated, shortened, cartoonish vision of an "imaginary world", and nothing could be further from the truth. It's an astonishing portrayal of a lost place and way of life that is surpassingly relevant in the current context of Middle-Eastern warfare and decay.
The people of that time were one of the great civilizations, some of the great thinkers, of antiquity. They were incredibly passionate and romantic.
To digress a liitle, here's a quote from one of the songs/poems in the Mathers translation; I cannot imagine higher praise ever being given to a woman:
See for yourself!
Even Allah, like a lover,
from molten threads
of the syrup of life wove her,
Then made all gems
and fruits with what was over.
There's a good opportunity for pedagogy here :-) Plus, as I understand it there are a lot of Muslims in GB these days, so this cross-cultural acknowledgment might be well-received.

The day is over at school and there were some wonderful costumes from James Bond to Medusa to Cruella de Ville (minus the dalmations)!
Harry Potter and varipousm pirates and witches were also evident.
I used Robert's idea of Arabian Nights which was great ( loved putting on the eye makeup).
Thank you for the ideas - I am keeping them all for future as I am sure to be involved in these days again!
Wish I could have taken pics but schools are very iffy about this nowadays especially as I am not on the permanent staff. Couldn't even get one for the Education challenge unfortunately>
Thanks again to everyone. What a great site this is!
Pauline

Ok, so where are the photos?
You don't honestly think you can get away without sharing the outcome, do you? |

Could you bring a magnifying glass and maybe a few other accessories (hat?) and be Nancy Drew? Or Sherlock Holmes? :) Hmm. Flower with a hat in it, umbrella, long coat: Mary Poppins?
Edited: whoops! Didn't notice there was a second page to this thread when I replied. Glad you had fun!
