I have a serious dilemma. I'm visiting the US next week and will be upgrading my camera. The new 5D looks good with more MP's plus it's light and small in comparison but the more expensive 1DmkII N is faster and I understand better focus abilities. But then again, it's more money and less MP's...
So... the big question... what do I do? I will use it for wildlife photography at times but otherwise real-estate photography, portraits and landscape. Sports? Tja... maybe but not very important.
So if you have tried both of these and can recommend based on differences in image quality, I'd appreciate it.
Important: I hear that the dynamic range is fantastic on the mkII N (better than the 20D) - is it as good on the 5D? This is probably the most important for me.
I only use high quality "L" glass but I understand that vignetting can still be a factor with the 5D, but I have never tried it.
I apologize in advance if these two particular cameraes have been discussed to death already. I could only find the non "N" version when I searched.

I too was thinking of getting the 1D mkII N when I got the 5D last fall and obviously you can see what my choice was. Take mostly portraits and landscape. Keep in mind that the 5D is full frame so it will be much better for real estate work.
Regarding sports however and wildlife + news photography, the 1D mmII N will blow the 5D out of the water because of the speed, crop factor, autofocus capabilities and weather sealing but I think the 5D is better because of the bigger sensor for portraits, real estate and landscape.
Don´t regret my choice one bit, love the 5D. |

Thanks Larus!
I ended up buying the 16-35 by the way. Thanks for your advice. I also bought a 10-22 that I use for real-estate work now but that will become redundant and back-up along with my 20D soon if I get a FF camera.

Hardly done to death but I asked the same Q here a while ago. I went for the 1Dn eventually and don't regret a single penny spent. With important shots I often shoot RAW to the CF card and JPEG to the SD card (belt and braces. Its certainly a whole heep of camera and I've just scratched the surface with what it can do.

One other thing is that the 1D MKII N has weather seals.
"Strong and reliable - magnesium alloy body with over 70 dust and moisture resistant seals" |

Go for the 5D.
I used to own a 5D, I miss it.

20D is better for wildlife because of 1.6X crop factor, lenses are longer. |

I believe that lens you bought, the Canon 10-22, only works with the 20D and the Digital Rebel...so that lens will be worthless to either of the cameras you are looking at.
Other than that I would go with the 5D for the full frame sensor, and cheaper.

yep, unless you shoot in the rain or need 8.5 fps, go w/ 5D |

Because your main focus is on landscape and portraits I would recommend the 5D |

I would recomend the 5D also...hard to say why, but it has more MP so you can crop to get teh same zoom you'd get on the 1.3x 1D. It is lighter, has lower noise & better dynamic range.
But you may have to be a pixel peeper to tell the difference on some of that. I have a 300D, my friend a 1D mk2n and we go out to shoot together and, well, the photos I see look about the same from both cameras.
The 1D is HUGE, and HEAVY compared to your 20D, the 5D is about the same. You will get used to the extra weight, but if you carry it alot that may be a consideration.
For sports or even wildlife the 8.5fps is nice, otherwise it eats memory.

Thanks again for all the replies. As a result, I just placed an order this morning for the 5D with overnight shipping (read: I'm doing the Snoopy dance in my office right now!!!) :).
TF: Yes, I realize that the EF-S 10-22 will be redundant but the beauty of it all is that I will now be able to use my better quality 16-35 f/2.8L for real-estate photography and get the same wide angle as I did before.
I bought a 1.4EX II extender a while back that I have so far only used once. At least by using this now (if or when needed), I will get close to my then old 20D focal lengths with my existing lenses.

My new 5D arrived today (thanks to you convincing me!) and it's fantastic! The sound, the feel, the images and even the smell is just great! The 20D was great but it's always nice with something new.
I realize it's not weather sealed as the 1D's but let's hope it's drool proof! :)
I also bought her a new Canon 350D today so she is drooling on the other side of the coach as she's in the process of mounting the strap and about to try it.
Here's one of the very first pictures (#3). Hand held without a flash inside my living room . Both my wife and my son are just as excited as me. I bet there will be a lot more pictures tonight!
