Time for another "which would you buy if you only had enough money for these two" question!
Wanting to replace my cheap 55-200mm f4.5/5.6 before my family goes to Alaska this summer. I can't make up my mind between the two for a little over $100 in price difference. Obviously the 2.8 would be nice but it's fixed at 200mm or nuttin, no zooming. Are these lenses pretty comparable optically? I notice the outer ring is about 5mm larger on the 2.8 (as well as being black, which I actually prefer over white). Any suggestions? Owners/users of either? |

If you're going to be shooting mostly outside when you're in alaska, then f/4 will provide more than enough light... Plus you'll get the range. I have the 70-200 f/4 and I love it! There are times that I wish I could open up to 2.8, but, I use the whole range of my lens, and know I couldn't make do with the prime.
From what I've heard, the two are optically similar... |

What about the sigma 70-200 2.8? Nice lens, not as much as the canon version.
if you're shooting outdoors often the slower lens you have now is enough, light wise.

maybe i'm picky, just prefer canon i guess... a friend just sold his 70-200 f2.8L IS for a major loss, BEFORE i found out, but i don't think could have afforded it anyway :P |

For what it's worth, that's how I felt about 3rd Party Gear until recently. I got a hold of a tokina WA and I have been really impressed w/ the quality... But, that's just me... in the end I'd rather have the canon too, but in the meantime... =] |
