Was just wondering how many people have actually been attacked or assaulted for taking a photograph. Has anybody ever had their camera broken by an angry subject?

Yeap. My camera was fine. It was my mistake. It was in China while a tried to take a pic of a shoeman's father. The guy got p...ed and followed me for 100meters. Finally nothing happened. After 2-3 months the story was forgoten and I stayed at this guy's shop to have my shoes fixed. A foreigner in China is a good subject so one Chinese guy tries to take a pic of me. The shoeman jumps and yields: "Did you ask him if he agrees?"
Lesson learnt. Ask before you take a pic if you have to...

I was attacked by a goose in Jackson, WY (does that count?) She (or he?) went for my head, and gave me a big scare. She came at me twice, once from the front, and then again from the back. They are a lot bigger than I thought they were.

If it was a goose, Ursula, then it's 'she'. Otherwise, 'he's' a 'gander', no?

You're so right. Never thought of that. I don't know if it was a goose or a gander.

I was taking some pictures in a very old cemetery when I stopped the car and got out to take a picture of the confederate area. I began walking around it to find the best POV. I knelt down to get a low angle when I heard something behind me grunting. I turned slowly and there posed for attack was two wild dogs both about knee high.

Its funny that it seemed like I had 15 seconds or so to think what to do but I know it was only a second or two. I looked at them and judged how far away for me they were (about 75 to 100 feet) and how far I was from my car (about 100 yards).

The hair on the back of my neck stood up and I took off for the car. The second I stood up and began to run they started chase. As I was running toward the car my wife opened my door but I still had to get around the door and into the car before they got to me.

I looked over my shoulder a couple of times and could see the gaining on me fast. I got to the car and slammed the door just as they reached the outside of the door. Drooling and barking the look like mad dogs.

I will honestly tell you that is the fastest I have ever run in my life. But being the photograph I am, I kept a good grip on my camera!

Nope. Ganders are still geese. "The male goose is called a gander." - wikipedia.org

At a punk rock show in Oakland last year I got hit in the moshpit and sucked into a really bad part of it.

At one point I had to smack someone in the head with my camera to keep him from plowing into me.

no damage to the camera at all. since then i've been a strong advocate of the durability of sony products.

I ran wet t-shirt contest fora while. Had one entrant get angry because I had taken her photo, even though I explained that I would be taking photos during the contest. I mean that WAS the reason I was sponsoring the contests. LOL

To calm her, I simply erased the photos of her while she watched. I swear drunk college girls can be vicious some times.

I wasn't attacked but kept my eye on the perp I thought was going to try something (you know keep your friends close and your enemies closer kind of thing).

I was at a house photographing my brother-in-laws horses while he waited to feed them, well there is a billy goat that runs free up there and has a habit of butting (literally) people that aren't paying him enought attention. lol I know he is only playing but I made sure he knew I was watching him and I even put out my hand a couple times to pat him on his head and horns, I didn't want to go down the muddy hill trying to cuddle my camera and keep it safe (even if it isn't a DSLR).

I did a bunch of local metal shows. I always arranged to have someone from security escort me into the pit. The guards seemed to like doing it too ... LOL

I also got stopped by a couple security guys for taking pictures of a Federal building in Spokane, Washington. I had no idea at the time you weren't allowed to make pictures of Federal buildings, but that's what they told me. They were BIG and threatening, and kept calling me "Ma'am". So I apologized profusely, walked on, and kept the pictures :)

i actually followed the same crew of promoters around for a year in oakland. they're called the pyrate punx. they did a pretty good job of insuring my safety and keeping from being robbed of my gear.

I was chased by killer bees.

Near sunrise early one Saturday morning when photogaphing a mountain preserve called Usury Park near Mesa, Arizona USA I stumbled into a hive of killer bees in a cleft of rock. People have been killed in this area after being swarmed by them and I thought I was a gonna become the next statistic. I ran with wild abandon along the edge of a steep cliff to escape while swatting at them with my hat. I managed to escape with only about 10-15 stings but bees spook me now.

I was threatened by a guy in San Francisco while changing the film in my camera but that was because he assumed I was a white supremacist because of my shaved head.

Not exactly attacked, but I was harassed, detained, and theatened for taking photos in the parking lot of a grocery store.
Yelled at and threatened for taking a picture of some people in a pickup truck once, too.
