I am debating over which of these two flashes to buy. Is the 580EX worth the extra $100? I also noticed that the 580EX has a slower recycling time (6 seconds) then the 430EX. Is this going to bother me? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

it really does depend on what your plans are for the flash:

portraits with multiple flashes and semi-complex lighting - go with the 580

a 100% improvement over the onboard flash for everyday, indoor ceiling bounce stuff - the 430 is the way to go

(i have a 420, a 430, and the ST-E2 which i freakin love and i'm yet to find myself wishing i had the 580 ... but i don't do weddings either)

There are basically two differnces between these models: The 580 is more powerful and the 580 can serve as a master in a wireless master/slave setup.

The power issue is where the nomenclature comes in: the 580 delivers the same amount of light at 58 meters as the 430 does at 43 meters. Both are very powerful units. The tradeoff is recycling time and speed at which batteries are drained. I have the 430EX and it is MORE than ample for my use, which mostly invloves bouncing off ceilings for a diffused light. I shot an entire wedding with the 430EX on one set of batteries (4 AA cells) and it was just starting to drag at the end. The church was smallish, and the flash had no trouble lighting the altar from the entrance. I think this was about 60 feet. All my shots had ample light.

As far as the master/slave issue is concerned, it goes without saying that in order to use a flash as a slave you need a master, so this is a when-and-if situation; you cans ave the money by getting a 430 now and if you ever need a wireless slave setup you can then get the 580 and slave the 430.

Both are excellent units, with full functionality (swiveling and tilting, flash zoom linked to lens feedback, extreme WA capability) so you can't go wrong with either of them.

I can't give you a comparison of the two, as I only own a 580EX. But i've had no problems with it so far. I've used it in a small home bouncing off walls to a big Australian Defence Force gala ball. No probs. 10/10.

I just got the EX430 and so far am happy with it. Here are a couple shots taken of a friend. Ceiling bounced the flash. Only other light in the room was a 60w desk lamp pointed the other direction.

I think the biggest diff is that the 580 is more expensive, has more reach, and can take a power source such as a battery pack.

The 430 has less power, costs less, cannot use battery pack.
It also detects cropped sensors, recycles faster, and adjusts.

What is a better flash depends on your needs/want.

I'd say neither, get the Sigma EF-500 DG SUPER Functions of a Canon 580 for the price of a Canon 430.

I have a 580 and although I am no expert by any means, it such a versatile piece of equipment.
My only suggestion is that if you buy the one your after you may live to regret it and beat yourself wondering "if only" ?
