Did you guys need to buy any type of special equipment to start shooting stock? Would there be anything you would recommend to someone starting out?

You have all you need to start. A camera and at least one eye.

Most of my stock shots are shoot with a 3 megapixel camera. So as long as it meets the pixel requirement of the particular site you don't really need expensive equipment if you upload to microstock sites.

I have been looking through which photos get the most downloads and it really looks like it could be just about anything! I guess that is the beauty of it.

Do you guys ever run out of ideas for shots?

Some stock sites will refuse particular pictures if they have too many of the same kind.

LOL..sorry already signed up, just haven't submitted any photos yet. I want to get my head around things before I start submitting, especially there because if you don't get 70% accepted on your first try you have to wait 3 months to submit again.

Am I allowed to be nosey and ask what income you get for the 333 downloads? It would be very useful to know the economics since this debate about micro stock never seems to get resolved.

probably one of the most important thing is to try to think advertisement/commercial ... what images would you see as a generic advirtisement image or ad in a magazine ... people .. objects on white or black (so designers can place text around it)... macros ... check around the rejected image forums on shutterstock - you can learn alot in there too

yeah, I just found the rejected images forums and while some of them look like they are so out of focus it is not funny, others make me wonder why they were knocked back. I am certainly getting a better idea of what they are looking for by seeing what they dont want.

istock &
Dreamstime

I've only been at it for a couple of months, so not many dl's yet. It is interesting, though, that both are space related.

Sometimes when a picture is rejected at one site it could be your best seller at another.

I see a lot of people in that rejected photos forum saying the exact same thing. That they were rejected at shutterstock for an image yet it was one of their best sellers and was accepted first go at another site. I guess you just have to try them all!

yes, basically a picture of anything sells, but of course pics of people and business things sell best. For starts shutterstock is good, as you get quite a few downloads of any type of shot (more downloads per image than istock or dreamstime anyhow (for me that is)).

Aaaah, now to work out how I can storm a few business meetings! lol Yes, I noticed that the business ones seem to have way more downloads. I might have to dress hubby up in his business suit and give him a folder or two to hang on to! hehe

that is the way to go ... against a white background ... have fun with it - shoot at the lowest ISO your camera has - use a tripod and as much lighting as you can - no flash ... and see what you come up with .. ban in suit with folder .. man in suit on phone ... man in suit sitting at a desk writing ... and so on ...

just some ideas :)
