Is the IS worth the extra hundreds of dollars?

I had both - I now only have the IS version. A definite YES from me - no discussion!

The IS is just part of the improvements, but definitely worth it in my opinion.

yes, can always turn that mode off, but if it aint got it, ya can't add it later.

I'll cast another vote for IS. There is another difference between these two versions, the IS verison has a circular aperture (curved blades) whereas, AFAIK, the non-IS version does not. Improved bokeh would be expected.
The only downside to IS is the appearance of IS-related effects in busy backgrounds that are slightly OOF, the "IS bokeh" effect. This is evidenced by diagonal "doubling" of OOF high-contrast edges and only appears when the IS system is very active, and certain background conditions are met (slightly OOF high-detail, high-contrast). IMO, it's not a big deal, and the benefits of IS greatly outweigh any negatives.

don't forget the weathersealing on the IS version.
