I have taken the radical step of buying:
16-35 f.2.8L (arrived this morning)
and
70-200 f2.8L (non-IS) (hopefully will arrive soon).
I plan to use these plus:
8mm Peleng
50mm f1.8
Pros: f2.8 across range. High quality glass above 16mm.
Cons: missing 35mm-70mm, nothing above 200mm. No more discrete photography.
I am doing this on the theory that I usually either take wideangle or zoom images, and very rarely do I need something in the middle. I want to see if I can ignore that gap, bridging it where necessary with the 50mm f1.8. Also to see if I really miss 300mm (in which case a 1.4 coverter may be required).
If so, I will sell all of my other lenses. If not, I will have to rethink my theory. Luckily, L lenses do not lose a lot of value if I need to resell! I will let you know how a month goes with the new selection.

Matt, you could always 'plug the gap' with the 24-70.

I like it ... wish I could do the same, however when I'm NOT doing my hobby, but still taking photographs (ie ... social events), then 35-70 is exactly the needed range (for me, at least). |

Thought of that: I would like to avoid the cost and the extra weight if it proves to be unnecessary. The Tokina 28-70 f2.8 is another cheaper option. However, I would ideally like to avoid having a semi-redundant lens (especially an expensive and heavy one). If I really miss the mid-range flexibility, I might have to look at a completely different set up.

Of course, on your 20D the 16-35mm has a 35mm equivalent range of 26-56mm. So you do have the "normal" focal length covered.

Yep, as pointed out, what you're really missing will be the range from 56mm-112mm equivalent, though you've got 80mm equivalent coverred with the 50/1.8... The 16-35 and 70-200 you will be exceptionally happy with. Once you shoot with the 70-200/2.8, good luck on going back to another telezoom ;-)
A 1.4x converter for the 70-200 is a great idea. The quality should still be outstanding and you're covered out to 280mm (448mm equivalent) @ f/4.
With regard to the gap, I do think you'll miss it, but it's not such a big range that the 50mm won't be a good "plug." good luck on the experiment!

You can always do the poor man's version of covering that range - just take a few steps forward or backward with your other lenses - works well! :-) |

Hey - your setup will be very close to mine. I have the:
16-35 f/2.8L;
70-200 f/2.8L IS; and
the 50mm f/1.8 II (soon to become an EF 50mm f/1.4; plus the
EF 1.4X II extender (works great with the tele zoom!)
I will probably soon get the 'missing' 24-70 f/2.8L but haven't missed it yet. Once I upgrade my 20D to a 5D there will be an instant need for it since the 16-35 will then become an ultra wide angle lens throughout it's full range. (then I can also sell off my trusty 10-22).
So I wouldn't worry too much about 'the gap' if I were you. You'll be happy with your choice.

Thanks for the comments! The prospect of a full frame sensor at some undefined future point in time is the main reason for committing to the new lenses and eliminating the EF-S lens.
