My new tripod and head. Cost more than all my lenses put together. Hopefully this is a one-off purchase.

That is a sweet tripod. I was checking out a head similar to that one in a camera store in Phoenix - really nice.

As to the lens thing... that only tells you you need to buy some nicer lenses! :)

I agree. Just can't justify the cost. The choice was for the tripod or for a top walk-around lens. DPC input guided me to the tripod - the logic being a tripod will do more for my images than good glass, and anyway no one piece of glass would suit all my requirements. Building up a collection of good lenses will take years.

Pretty sweet tripod Paul.

I could not bring myself to spend the bucks on the Gitzo so I bought the Bogen Manfrotto 190MF3 Magfiber and the 486 Ball Head. Almost the same set up as you got but like half the price. Just received it today so can't wait to get in the field with it.

Sweet setup. I was personally looking at the G1278 for myself.

Until I came across the Giottos 1002.

I added the Velbon QR mounting plate on the top of it which is totally sweet.

at 250grams for the ballhead and 125grams for the mounting plate, but with a 6kg weight rating, I was pretty happy.

That combo actually cost me around 80 dollars US.

If you want to see my detailed description of my tripod head setup, check this thread out. A light and very cheap tripod head assembly that also allows Pano rigging or at the very least level panning with the camera mounted normally.
