That is very sad. I enjoyed watching his talents as a great baseball player.

Don't know him and don't follow baseball, but I feel for his family, friends and fans. Always a big loss when a sport hero pass away -

Last year South Africa hosted the under 16 Rugby World Cup and one of the players (age 15) died after suffering a stroke. I actualy was at the stadium when it happened. Very sad.

That is so sad. Way too young. Pro players that have work out thier entire lives, when they retire just get huge from lack of exercise. I hope Tony Gwynn takes note.

RIP, a great player.

I think maybe his might have more to do with the baseball he took to the head, more than gaining weight after retirement.

I really did not know of any potentially fatal blow to the head he may have taken. But, that dude looked like he was pushing 3 bills. And thats not healthy.

So whatever the cause, sad stuff.

Sad indeed...

Tony Always was larger than life even while playing... Riggs you a SanDag fan? Tony's still in the game as Head Coach for Aztecs here.

No, not a Padres fan, but I always respected Tony Gwynn, and loved to watch him hit. Nice guy too. He was quite amazing in his playing days.

Kirby was one of the last of a disappearing breed...Kirby, Tony Gwynn, Joe Carter, Cal Ripken (and his brother, Billy)...guys who were always smiling while they were out in the field. Win or lose, they were just happy to be PLAYING BASEBALL. Yeah, they were paid well, but they probably would have played with the same gusto without the money. I tdidn'r seem like a job to them.

First Kirby's career was cut short by the gloucoma, and now this. Sad indeed.

Its sad, It was always so much fun to watch him play, he had so much enthuasm for the game. Its really unfortunate the pit falls he had off the field, The times I met him he seemed troubled and unhappy. I hope hes in a better place now.

I will never forget him hitting the game winning home run in game six of the '91 world series. I was sitting in a bar in downtown Minneapolis, the game (and series) being a diversion from other issues in my life at that time and it was wonderful. I don't usually shed a tear for celebs who pass, but this one really hurts.

Puckett was always fun to watch - you couldn't help but have a good time watching a ball game with him in it. Even for us Braves fans, there was never any ill will toward Kirby even though he basically turned the '91 Series around for the Twins in Game 6.

Bet he can jump a lot higher now.

Terrible news. I met Kirby at a resort in Mexico about a year or two ago and he was very easy going and personable. We had many a beer at a swim-up bar on the resort. There was no mention of baseball other than his comment about my wife's twins charm on her necklace (we have twin daughters). Every time I saw him he called out "Hey Michigan" and I would respond "Minnesotaaaaa." He had a personality that made it easy to see why he was so highly regarded in his community and by his peers while he was playing.

Only pic I can easily find on my computer - Kirby has his back to the camera, I am to his left sitting at the bar (my wife ain't much with the camera).

As to his weight, I don't doubt it was a factor. He was at least 300 pounds when I saw him - and he was maybe 5'6" tall. Regardless, he died far too young.
