if a company sends you on an assignment, you're an assignment photographer...
if you're freelance, you do your own shooting, shoot what you want, promote yourself how you want, and sell what you want to who you want...so go out and take the pictures, then decide your market and who to sell what to, then present yourself.

Probably the easiest way is through the microstock sites. Some people are really making good money there. Others resent the idea of selling their photos for pennies.

well then you're a stock shooter, right? And worse yet, a micro-stock shooter. No doubt most freelance photographers also shoot for stock, also go on assignments and so on, but shooting only microstock, unless you're lise gagne probably just won't cut it.

The best suggestion yet :-) Also, do some study of local markets (tourism related, maybe). Find out who is producing these products and work to see how you might fit into that.

I don't think she's the only one making decent money out of it. And nobody says it's got to be the only source of income. But it can be a great way for a beginner to learn.

I don't know about that book, although the description looks good.
I can't remember where, but I have heard of the other book, "Photographer's Market". It was highly recommended as a must have and I just ordered it from Amazon.com.

I didn't opt for the free shipping/extra days tradeoff. I can't wait to add these to my collection of books and magazines that I have yet to read. |

I don't have to drop the soap in a prison shower to learn that it's a good way to get screwed, but to each his own.
