ive been thinking long and hard about what camera I am going to buy. I am pretty sure that i have decided on a canon 350 D rebel xt. Since I am new to the whole digital slr scene, I was wondering about peoples input on lenses. Im thinking that I dont just wanna buy the body, but that i might as well go for a set that comes with a 18-55mm lens. Has any body else had ane experience with this set? What do you think? Also, these do not usually seem to come with a memory card... am I seing this wrong or is that just a fact?

When I bought my 350D, I got the Body, 18-55mm lens, 500MB Memory Card, Canon Digital Printer, extra Cartridges, Photo Paper and all the software. It was a Christmas Special. Luckily I already had the Sigma 300mm zoom Lens. I enjoy my 350D. Very Good for amateurs.

The 350D Rebel XT is a very good choice. I recently got a 20D with the kit lens you are talking about. I would not recommend the kit lens. It is very poor in low light conditions. Spend the money on a better walk around lens. I am planning on buying a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Many people on this site own one and it has gotten very good reviews. It runs at about $350. The hard truth is that if you don't put good glass on your camera, having a good camera won't do you too much.

The kit lens is better than most think IMO.

Also if your budget can take it then buy this lens:Click

New it runs around $350.00.

Also click a few peoples profiles that have the Rebel XT and see what lenses they have and you can pm them and ask them how they feel about a certain lense they carry. I for one really love both of my 70-300mm lenses. The Quantaray is for sale.

Most DSLR cameras don't come with memory cards. I guess it's Canon's way of squeezing a little extra profit out of every sale, and avoiding people just using the stock low-speed, low-capacity cards and thinking it's the cameras fault they run out of space so easily, and it takes so long to save images.

For lenses, the kit that includes the 18-55mm is a good choice. Another really good lens to get in addition to the kit lens is the Canon 50mm 1.8. It's only about 80 bucks, but it's a great deal faster (lets in more light, allows you to use a faster shutter speed) than the kit lens, and has much better optical quality.

You'll probably want a zoom lens too - the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 is a great zoom lens for about $400. It's a constant 2.8 aperture through the range, and while it's not quite as fast as the 50mm 1.8, it's just about equivelant as far as image quality goes.

After that, you'll have to decide if you want a wide angle, or a telephoto, or both...

Thanks for the advice. I know its probably not the best choice to go with the kit lens right away, but im not sure if I can afford much more... maybe ill take a look at the canon 50 mm 1.8 though, that sounds affordable. Guess first things first... gotta get the camera and a memory card

Sigma 70-300mm APO DG is a good budget lens for around $200. I like it.

I didn't like the 18-55 at all and got rid of it on ebay as soon as I could.

I've actually heard pretty good things about the Sigma 18-200. It's not a perfect lens, but it's got an amazing range and would be a great lens to learn on.

THis is a great lens review site for doing more homework.
