OK. I have a decent picture in the Square Crop challenge, with a decent average, quite a few positive comments, and from people that I really respect, very accomplished photographers. And then you hit an update button and you realize you just received a vote of 1. I cannot understand it, really. In my mind to vote 1 on a picture that picture would have to be completely off topic, out of focus, over or underexposed...in fact I cannot really remember voting 1 myself.
If a picture is fitting the challenge, is technically good, good lighting, in focus, certainly not offensive (regarding the subject matter), why a 1 ? Trolls, what are you thinking ? What are you trying to achieve ? Look at challenge winners ! How many winners got 1's ? Did the 1's prevent them from winning ? Grow up !

Well, DNMC should not come into play for this challenge, at least if the shot is really cropped square, as yours is. You will always get a couple or three ones from folks that just did not like the shot. That's a fact of DPC life. They are not necessarily trolls, it's just their way of voting.
Wait until the end of voting, then see if the 1 is still there. If it is not, then that voter's pattern of voting WAS found to be troll-like, and the votes were not counted. If the vote is still there, chalk it up to someone that did not appreciate what you were going for.

They are hypothetical beings whose onnly purpose in life is to mess with voting by voting good photos low. FWIW, statistical analysis of DPC voting patterns indicates that true troll votes are quite rare, but that doesn't stop folks from believeing that their low votes must surely be from trolls ;-)

Well, it seems to happen to everyone, so I would guess that it all equals out in the end. It's annoying, but it's probably not worth it to get too upset about it.

TROLLS: mythological creatures with a short, stout, build and an abnormally small braincase. Known for their stupidity, stubborness, and beligerant demeanor.

not everyone has your mind.

I personally have only used 1 a few times, but if someone feels thats what the photo warrants, that's why there's a 1 to vote. You'll live.

But of course, I will live. And I will not lose any sleep over getting low votes. I would not mind though to be able to get an insight from someone who has just voted my picture a 1 as to what was going behind his/her mind, if anything...ah, well...

I think ones without comments are the worst thing on this site.
I'm always devastated even though I know better.

I'm thinking of collecting them (1's) as a hobby.

I hear what you're saying...a score of one (1) should, IMO, be used for really poor attempts.

On the other hand, I feel the same way about a score of ten (10). Those scores should be reserved for unbelievable shots.

But there aren't many threads about people complaining due to voters giving away too many tens...
:-)

I've been in one Challenge so far...and received 14 tens, and 7 twos. Although I was flattered by the tens, I really didn't think my picture deserved them. The twos, though, might have been more deserved.

So it kinda goes both ways...throw out your highs and lows. Be flattered at the highs, and laugh at the lows, 'cuz in the end, it usually evens out.

Too many people are afraid of posting comments that say anything other then "cool photo" because they might get called out here in the forums or cause someone to quit.
