Curious, does anybody make decisions about which photo to enter based on how it looks as a thumbnail on the voting page?

I do. My thumbnail needs to be able to stand out from the pack. Most people scan through thumbnails first. Click on ones they see look "nice" and vote accordingly.

Yeah I find myself doing that all the time as a voter. But I guess the question I was getting at was would you submit something that looked better as a thumbnail over a photo that looked better at full size? Assuming both photos were worthy of a submission.

tough call, i definetly agree some thumbnails look awesome but when you click on them "nothing" happens :-), on the other side some thumbnails look dull but are hiding an explosive or hidden gem behind them ... right ? thats why the thumbnails should/must/it's good to be larger ...
and as rikki said it's good for thumb to stand out of the pack, it will be notice ad voted accordingly preferably over 6 :-) LOOL

I don't really base the decision about what to enter on how the thumbnail looks; rather, I view it as a clue to how likely the image is to be well received. Definitely I agree that an image with a strong thumbnail is likely to be voted higher - so if I find that, once I've submitted an image, the thumbnail by itself looks strong, I figure that my image is more likely to score well. If my picture doesn't thumbnail nicely, that doesn't necessarily mean I'll submit something else.

First impressions count for a lot so the thumbnail will always grab - or not grab - the attention. I have to stop myself from overlooking a shot because the thumbnail is not grabbing me.

To date, I have not yet worked out how to get the balance between what I consider to look good as a full size image and what has impact as a thumbnail. I have noticed that effective use of borders helps.

I never look at the thumbnails and certainly don't choose from the thumbnail page.

Only have a couple challenge votes under my belt, but so far I don't pay much attentention to the thumbnails. I look at each and every picture in the challenge, some I vote on right away if they strike me strongly in some way, some I pass by and return to. I certainly would never skip one over and not even LOOK at in fullsize just because the thumbnail didn't grab me. That's not fair to the photographer.

That said, when just surfing the galleries, I DO choose by thumbnail...

I typically scan the thumbs before voting. My reasons for doing so are to "size up the competion" and to check for nudes(which I may not want to pop up as the next image depending on my environment at the time). I can't recall everr having surfed through the thumbs looking for pretty ones because as Goran said first impressions based on the thumbs aren't 100% acurate. I just like to know what to expect before I begin.
