The 8th is good for me and I'll might make it two days anyway and explore that area. I'll probably bring a kayak and off-road bike and see what's around.

Broward County resident (Coral Springs, just south of Boca Raton in Palm Beach County) here--would love to try to meet other DPC'ers if you guys get something together!

I think that somebody needs to take the reins on this GTG. ArpeggioAngel seems to have been trying to gather/maintain interest in this GTG but seems unsure as to whether or not she's the right person to solidify the details.

I nominate greatandsmall (I hope you don't mind) to head up this GTG since she initially suggested the destination and is familiar with the area. I, like ArpeggioAngel would be happy to lead the way, but I don't think that I could possibly do as good a job as someone with local knowledge. We need to establish a meeting place and time, an itinerary, and hotel ideas for those staying overnight.

Yikes! Hadn't given it much thought since Gracious came up with the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area suggestion. It looks like she hasn't posted for a while. I think that place sounds like a great idea, but I have no knowledge of it.

I'd be happy to put something together; but I might need a day, or so, to collect my thoughts. I guess we're talking about April 8th and possibly 9th? Maybe the ORCA on Saturday and a kayak trip on Sunday? Feedback, please!

You're right, I checked back through this thread and now see that it was, in fact, Gracious who suggested Oslo Riverfront.

Feedback: Your ideas about ORCA on Saturday and a kayak trip on Sunday sound great. To enable more people to attend, maybe we should set the meeting time for Saturday lunchtime. This would allow some time for travel on Saturday morning for those who aren't close by. We could then go to ORCA for the late afternoon light and sunset.

Again, I am extremely flexible and these are just suggestions to get the ball rolling.

I am disappointed and surprised at the initial interest in this GTG and the lack of feedback. I check this thread often and see that, like now, 12 hours have passed since you asked for feedback. I really hope that those who are interested will provide their feedback to these ideas. Only a month to go, and some people (like buzzrock from Michigan) need to make travel arrangements.

I hope that we can compile all the ideas from those interested, work out an itinerary that works for the majority, and plan a GTG that is appealing to as many DPC'ers as possible. If this can be done soon enough, this GTG might gain interest from more DPC'ers from out of the area also, making it a very enjoyable experience.

It sounds like everyone was hanging back, waiting for someone to plan it. Here's a place we've been wanting to go: St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park

I can arrange for kayak rentals to be delivered to the launch Sunday, (hopefully). We can paddle across the Intracoastal Waterway and spend the day at the park. It looks like a great place, and we should be able to find lots of secluded spots to photograph wildlife. Everyone would need to bring, or rent, waterproof bags for camera equipment, as well as food and drink.

If this is satisfactory, I'll need a headcount to start thinking about kayak rentals and lodging.

Sounds great! I've got extra waterproof bags for equipment that others can borrow.

You've got it. Also, sickdog just PM'd me regarding a possible GTG in Florida, so I directed him to this thread.

This should serve as a bump so that he can find it and that the rest of the crowd might also come across it with feedback.

april 8th and 9th is more than enough notice for my fiance' and myself to get ready.

we're in fort lauderdale and we don't have vehicals but with enough notice we can generally get anywhere... except Burmingham Alabama... we have agreed that we're never going there again.

we've never been kayaking but we love camping and i know she'd love to get some wildlife shots.

the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area looks ideal but we can look at other locations if given enough notice.

sickdog: It seems that greatandsmall is now suggesting St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park since she knows more about that area. Either way will work for me, but if you are going to start researching it, you might want to start there instead.

Well, I don't really know much about either area. I was thinking about ORCA the first day the St. Lucie Inlet for the second day.

How do these things usually work? Do you go to the same place both days? I have no idea how to plan one of these. Help!

Either way, it's pretty close for me. So for those making the drive, maybe you should choose the location.

Just give me the details and I'm there. Weekends are wide open for me. Is there camping available? That would make the trip perfect.

cool thanks!

i have to be off and start cleaning...

while my fiance' will be happy about the GTG, she will not be happy with the state of this apartment after she's been gone a week.

i'll keep checking the thread. keep me posted!

I don't know how "these things usually work" or if it matters what usually happens. It will be simpler once we get comments from those who are interested. I think the two places over two days idea is a good one.
03/04/2006 02:08:42 PM · #68
I vote for both places as well.

Now camping sounds like a fantastic idea!!! Can we pull this off as well? Probably. I think that the camping idea will not appeal to everybody, but it is possible that this could be an option for some, and for others, a nearby hotel or motel. I don't know of the camping opportunities in that area, but Jonathon Dickinson State Park (spelling?) is a fine place to camp on the east coast that also offers scenic areas as well as a shuttle upstream for a canoe/kayak trip down the Loxahatchee river. Nearby is the beach with a place called "Blowing Rock" or something like that that I hear is nice, but I haven't been there yet.

Another great destination for all of the above is Peace River KOA and the nearby Myakka River Sate Park.

I'm open for any ideas, however, it seems that it's diffucult to organize this with the destination already in question.

If I'm ever going to get out of the house to enjoy this beautiful day (what's left of it) I'd better go now. I'm off to the Las Olas Art Show and then to Flamingo Gardens, time permitting.

I'll check back this evening.

Great suggestion! I was just researching Jonathan Dickinson State Park. They have cabins, camping and kayak rentals (none of which St. Lucie Preserve has). This might be the ideal place, possibly for two days.

Here's a link: Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Sorry for all of the confusion; but I'm fairly new to this area and don't know squat about organizing GTGs. How about if everyone who likes this idea PMs me and I'll put together an itenerary?
03/04/2006 03:34:39 PM · #73
OK, here's what I've come up with, so far:

Jonathan Dickinson State Park has all of the amenities.
This is the busy season, and it may be very crowded.

St. Lucie Inlet Preserve, Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, Blowing Rocks and the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse are all in that area. We may want to head out to one of those places for some seclusion.

The whole place is amazing, with the bluest water I've seen in Florida.

It may be pretty hot for camping; but for those interested JDSP has sites available. I'm told the "River Campground" is close to the Cabins. The person on the phone gave me different info than the reservation website. One campsite can accomodate two large, or three small tents and two cars. I did a test reservation on reserveamerica.com
and the price came out to be more than I was told over the phone (800-326-3521). I suggest choosing the campsite online and then calling to reserve it. If you want to share a campsite, PM me and I'll compile the information. Due to the heat, I will either stay in a hotel or drive back home for the night (My husband's a wuss; and needs cold to sleep).

They also have cabins for $85 to $95 per night. Reservations are not taken until on or after March 9th. That number is 561-746-1466.

I'll be going down to scope it out in a couple of weeks. It might be worth reserving a site, if you plan to stay in the park. Once I make the trip, I'll be back with some better information, including hotel options.

thanks greatandsmall and yakatme for jumping on this thread. My home computer has been on the fritz this weekend so it is making it difficult to keep in touch. I don't know if I will spend the whole weekend out there, but I am all for any location suggested for at least all day saturday.

I'm in!

The camping and cabins sound like fun!
The 8th and 9th work for me as well.
