I have been approached about using one of my images in two ways.
1) as the front/back cover for a day planner approx. 8x11" per side, print run 5-10,000
2) as a page in a calendar print run 50-100,000
these would both be targetted to a specific type end-user to which this marketeer has a good access.
Any ideas as to what fair compensation would be? |

Doug,
I started there, but didn't find it addressed my situation. |

As a rights-managed stock image, I'm guessing the charge for the first use should be $1-200, and for the long print run anywhere from maybe $250-500.
I would check license terms at a RM stock site like Alamy, Corbis, or Getty, and see what they'd charge for such uses. |

Why doesn't this help? It has all the variables that you're after and a whole lot besides. If it doesn't give you the numbers you want then that might tell you that you're trying to do something the market doesn't. You sought advice and got a very good answer I thought.

thanks...checking w/Alamy they suggest ~$600 for the short run, ~$850 for the longer one. I'll check the others a little later. |

Didn't mean to get your hackles up Brett. I just didn't see that the three choices that they offered, Advertising, Corporate and Editorial fit the usage I was talking about.
It had nothing to do with the numbers, and I don't see why you would imply that it did. Perhaps you could show me where I would check for either a calendar or the day planner usage. When checking the Advertising section none of the specs fit well and they don't even offer front cover as a usage...much less front and back. Even checking the back cover usage, the calculation yielded NO DATA.
You make think that is helpful information, but for me, it is not. |

Yes, I'm well known for under-pricing (see my print gallery), but this time I at least hit the right order of magnitude : )
Good luck -- sounds like a great project! |

OK, I can see that the Day Planner might be sort of equivalent to Brochure/Cat, but not so sure about the Magazine = Calendar and the usage at 1/2 page, since it would be a full page print. That would yield:
Type of Use:: Advertising
Specific Use:: Magazine
Press Run:: 50,000 to 100,000
Size:: Full page or Major Illustratio
Low Price:: $850.00
Average Price:: $1,250.00
High Price:: $1,700.00
Survey = 72
Of course, I like that better, but it seems a bit high. Having not done this sort of negotiation before, I don't really have a perspective yet on what is fair and reasonable. I guess that is what negotiation is all about, eh? |
