I seen the suggestion for a demotivational challenge thread go through again the other day and as luck would have it I had on of those days.
Any wordsmiths in the house want to help with the caption?
I have: Proactivity - Remember that the person who fixes a sinking boat is rewarded as a hero whereas the individual who could prevent the boat from developing that leak is not rewarded at all.
...And yes I like the tilted horizon.
If you work in a Corporation you know where this is coming from... :)

Love the concept, it's a hoot. My $.02...first, the capital Y at the end of "Proactivity" bothers me for some reason - just looks off. Second, "whereas" is one word.
Other than that, it rocks. I know folks who should probably order a copy.

I truly to like the concept, but have a bit of a problem with a portion of the statement made, namely....whereas the individual who could prevent the boat from developing that leak is not rewarded at all.
If indeed the someone had the ability to prevent the boat from developing the leak... and that person failed to do just that, then it could be argued that they were derelict in the performance of their duty and not worthy of a reward.
It has been a rather long day, and perhaps I am reading this wrong...
The very best to you in your endeavours... I can appreciate how one can become disillusioned with the corporate world.

"In our imperfect world, he who saves the ship from sinking is lauded as a hero by all. How strange that is, when most ships will never founder because of the unsung heroes who keep them sound and seaworthy at all times."

I like yours, awpollard, for demotivational... is the big Y for Why Be Proactive? Bear_Music has a swell motivational one there too.
Don't mind me, I gotta case of the late-night rhymies, or maybe it's salty-doggerel:
(motivational)
Plug the leaky boat and you'll be lauded for your might.
Build a boat that's leakproof... you'll have won the nobler fight.
(demotivational)
Plug the leaky boat and they will take you out to lunch.
Build a boat that's leakproof and you'll take a sucker-punch.
Plug the leaky boat and you'll be lauded for your might.
Build a boat that's leakproof... your reward is oversight.
Save a sinking ship and you're the stuff of sailor's lore.
Build a tighter vessel - anonymity's assured.
Plug the leaky boat and you'll be lauded for your might.
Build a boat that's leakproof and you'll find the praise is slight.
(ambiguous?)
Plug the leaky boat and you'll be lauded for your might.
Build a boat that's leakproof... your reward is watertight.
Yes be very glad I'm too tired to rattle off any more ;-)
Good luck with your poster. |

Andy,
While your pic and design are pretty good, the text isn't really in line with what the other Demotivationals do. There seems to usually be a twist that puts a negative spin on a good quality. I don't see that in Proactivity. Maybe the text is a little verbose.
There's a person who fixes a leak (hero, and could be argued was proactive depending on how early he started fixing) and a person who could have prevented it. If it was prevented by that person, he did his job, and if not, he's incompetent.
The phrasing isn't quite there yet.

How about...
Fix a leak and be a hero, Prevent the leak and be a zero.
Love the ideas as it is in line with one of my philosophies on corporate life:
Management fire-fighters are always rewarded for doing something that they should have prevented.

Thanks all, love that one Robt.
Yes I'm thinking the y has to go.
The concept is "Proactive vs Reactive" the bottom is Why be proactive and not noticed, When you can be Reactive and Rewarded (for something that could have been prevented).
Being Proactive is usually hindered by bean counters and money, companines don't like to spend money on that which they perceive as not broken.
Much of the Action where I work is reactive...Who did this? Why did this happen? Never "How could this have been avoided" (that costs money) Always ending with "We'd like to thank Joe Smoe for getting this under control"...
I work in Information Technologies...Can you tell?

Why go looking for problems? When people notice that the ship is sinking your efforts will be better rewarded.
I would recommend changing the choice of case: the style is usually to have small caps in the middle of the title with large caps at either end!

Being in the QA field, I subscribe to the "Rule of 10's"
For every dollar spent on prevention of problems
=10-dollars if a problem is found during the manufacturing process
=100-dollars problems are found at final inspection/acceptance
=1000-dollars if discovered by the customer.
