I'm considering getting a super wide angle lens. Ive been reading reviews. I am considering one of these two lenses.

//www.thkphoto.com/products/tokina/afl-00.html

I have a Sigma that I really enjoy and the 10mm is cool, and I have never heard of Tokina. I figured that would be enough to sell me, but the reviews I have read said that the Simga comes with a 1 year warranty, which is pathetic as it is, and supposedly is cheaply made, to add to that. Supposedly, the Tokina is right under the 1000 dollar Nikon 12mm lens. So I am confused. If any one has any experience with these, your input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I have the sigma and love it! I reckon it is a great value lens with excellent quality for the money. I love the feel of it and it's no slouch in focusing and sharpness. Highly recommended

Does it feel cheap? How long have you had it? Does it still work like new? Do you think it would break easily?

I've got the Tokina. The build quality is fantastic. It's also constant F/4 and its length doesn't change with different focal lengths. Of course the Sigma has HSM, but focus is fast with the Tokina anyway.

No question in my mind that the Tokina does a better job over the 18-24 range than the D70 kit lens. so I tend to use it for all wide angle shots.

I have the 12-24 tokina.
I don't have any complaints really.. or well, sometimes I think it is a little clumsy getting it in and out of manual focus (moving the focus ring) sometimes it seems to stick a little, but perhaps I am doing something wrong.

Just to add to that.

I haven't don't any 'tests' on it.. i guess i could say .. it is a great sharp lens, with great conrast, you'll love it.. and have that be just as qualified as anyone elses ooh and ahhh... but to really know how a lens is, i think you have to look at indepth tests and reviews. Any lens looks ooh ahhh good and sharp and has contrast when only compared to itself.

What about manual focousing on the Tokina? Ive had lenses that were REALLY hard to get focoused corectly. Any problems with that?

Supe-wide's have very deep DOF's, manual focus is often a very minimal thing for landscapes, etc. Only comes to play in more portrait aspects. People up close....in which case super-wides are not very good.

Here are a few band shots taken with the Tokina...

(Build quality on the Tokina is superb. I bought it shortly after my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, and though the quality is not of the same level. It is far superior in feel quality than any other lens but my 70-200mm)

Yes, I can agree that the build quality is there. It feels like you are attaching a hand granade to your camera :)

I had the Tokina for a Canon mount and I have had several Sigma lenses.
The quality of both lenses are good. Optically, looking at Photozone.de, the sigma is better. Sigma comes with a one year international warranty. In the U.S. they add an additional 2 or 3 year warranty, unless you buy a "grey market" Sigma. One year warranty doesn't bother me, as Canon lenses only come with a one year warranty as well.
