After I obtained a LCD monitor last year I used to preview my challenge entries on the LCD monitor and on a CRT monitor. Then I would tweak to make the image fairly acceptable on both...
Well, last night I'm up late finishing an image for an upcoming challenge. I go to bed pretty happy with what I've accomplished. This morning I decide to have a cup of coffee in front of my wife's PC. YIKES! Glad I looked. The difference on her CRT versus my LCD monitor is amazing. My proud image looked lifeless and flat (no contrast) on that CRT.
I've come to a happy middle ground after fine-tuning the image again.
Lesson relearned - don't forget to look both ways before you submit!!!

| so, when I get the comments that my image has no contrast and is lifeless and dull, I can chalk it up to not having an LCD monitor? |

Well no, if you edited on an LCD, and someone looked at it on a CRT, it would look lifeless and dull. If you're using a CRT, it will look probably TOO contrasty on an LCD, so you have no excuse ;)
EDIT: I have noticed however, that only the cheaper LCD's seem to add too much contrast. The higher end ones seem to yield about the same image as a good CRT.

Its funny this subject came up. I have set my screen background to the same image on both my laptop LCD and my pc's LCD and comparing the two is just depressing. The colors are just a tad different for the most part but the overall effect is off significantly, Thats what gave it the "Wow" factor. Now I understand 1 of the comments I recieved that seems so totally off what others have said. Unfortunately, this immage is in current challenge but I will definately check before the next one.

Hey. I take offense to that comment. ;^)
The LCD I have is a 19" Dell FS - supposed to be pretty decent. The CRT's on the other hand...well, they might not be the best. BTW, I do use calibration software/hardware (Spyder2) on the LCD.

There was a poll about a year ago here asking people whether they use an LCD or a CRT. If memory serves, the large majority used LCD's and I suppose the margin is even wider now, a year later.
I do everything on my laptop LCD. I've also got both LCD and a CRT screens at home, and a CRT at work. I can't tell the difference between screens.
I think if poeple can see a big difference between their own LCD & CRT screens, something is wrong with one or both of them.
Maybe all of the different screens I use are just equally screwed up the same way. :-D

If I were you, I'd adjust my entry back to the way it was, optimized for the good LCD screen. Probably not a good idea to play to the vast minority here who have crappy CRTs. ;-)

| I've been dealing with the same issue... I recently got a laptop and I was shocked at the difference in the apparent quality of my image between my CRTs on my desktop and the LCD on my laptop. I must say that I prefer my CRTs... It should be an interesting Spring, as I'm traveling, and I'll be away from my desktop the whole time... Only LCD editing for me for awhile... |

| I believe the laptops, as a rule, have lower quality LCD's than your stand alones. Unless you have upgraded it to a higher video quality, I think you are stuck. Just realizing that, voters should not be so harsh on the quality if voting from their laptops. |

Ahh, that explains it! Thank you for this thread. I am getting a lot of comments on my current challenge entry, and my husband and I were laughing, because one comment will say "too sharp" and then the very next one will say "love the sharpness". !!! I guess those on LCD's are seeing it a bit sharper than the others.
Actually, I was tossed on sharpening or softening the image in the first place. It doesn't matter...opinions vary so widely that if I WOULD have softened, then some voters would have been sure to ask for MORE sharpness! :) Life at DP! |
