Centered, not centered...doesn't matter. Balanced applies to "does it work?". You know, is it appealing in a square frame. IMO of course. ;^)
edit to add: Robert, you instigator you... he-he.

Oh dear. I didn't remember the word "balance" being there... Now I gotta think some more... :-)
No, really, to me it's what G2B says - the picture has to be well-balanced within the confines of the crop, as should all pictures. But I also have a thing for centered pics now and again, despite the fact they tend to meet with universal disapproval. |

Well I'm square. My entry will be submitted tonight. Got the shot yesterday and for once I am having trouble deciding between two very different shots. Usually I have an idea and I shoot. Yesterday I was just shooting and got two that hit me right away as good for this challenge when I viewed them last night. Been staring at them all day and just am torn. |

Yah... If y'all know my work, you know I VERY often center things, do them symmetrically, whatever. And usually get dinged for it as well :-) I'm just curious about that phrase, so as "glad" said, I decided to get "instigatory"; I'd rather see this debated before than during, if you know what I mean? My sense of it is, anything goes within a square crop.

If I go with what I've been working on (and I've put some work into this one!) it's centered and symmetrical (for the most part). Can't get to it tonight, so it'll probably be tomorrow. Plenty of time to come to my senses... :-) |

That could be me. Finally fine-tuned my entry, I've put some hours in it (shooting & editing). It's centred (because I can't do it un-centred) and almost symmetrical (well, a little bit. Is that possible, to have a photo that's a little bit symmetrical? ;) )
And I love it.

I'm looking forward to this one. I really like a good square crop. I will enjoy voting. I just hope I can come up with a shot myself! |

Although I love the square format (still shoot a lot of 6x6), I'll probably pass on the square crop challenge or go B&W to get under the 150k limit. With my shooting style (very detailed, deep DOF) I have enough trouble getting a more traditional apsect ratio under 150k, let alone a 640x640. Sigh... |

I just entered the first challenge entry I've really worked on with my new camera. I am also in "comfort" but didn't shoot that specifically for the challenge.
I had the idea in my head, and it turned out very close to what I envisioned. No way it would have happened in basic, though. It did require some work. Good luck everyone. |

Well you guys can just about throw anything you want in without fear of getting the brown. I should have that one wrapped up, I don't even understand the shot I'm working up right now...
...but it is cool.

OK, so here's my problem. I have a picture for this that I really like, that I did a lot of work on, but no one else seems to like it. Normally, I show my planned entries to non-photography people and they REALLY like them, then I get my usual scores. So, if the non-photography people are saying "eh" to this one, will it score higher than usual? ;-) |

Just for a change you could try entering an image without showing it to anyone previously. Just your own work as you intend it, and like it. Not something to suit others. You may find it rewarding to do it all by yourself.

Man, all I want is to beat my best so far of ± 5.... Now how hard can that be? Seems pretty hard for me, as my Odd Couple sitting at 4.8 at the moment. Mine is in, so lets see. |

I've done that, too. It's just that a few of the folks I work with are aware I do this silly thing every week and now they come to ask "what are you entering this time? What's the challenge?" They'll also come ask to see the winners, too. If nothing else, maybe I'll get a few people thinking about ways to improve their snapshots. I've already got people looking at the world differently - as in "Hey Deb, that would make a great picture, don't you think?" It's kinda neat.
But I'll definitely enter the one I've worked on for this. Because I do, indeed, really like it. |

Can't wait to hear that story, Rikki.
I'm in. I initially entered one that I went out on a limb (not literally) with editing. I've changed it to a more conservative variation. The first one just looked fake to me, not 100% like I would have liked. Hoping to scratch another 2006 goal off my list with a second consecutive 6.0 (assuming I don't lose 0.6263 points on my Odd Couple in the next 50 hours).

Cat? Kid? Bottle of alcohol? Oh wait. That's the Comfort challenge. :-)
Something perfectly round would be good, as it would fit in a square nicely. |

I am going for a 6.4 with this entry ;o) I hope it'd just not wishful thinking. I worked hard and I think it really cool looking. Can't wait for rollover tomorrow!

Hmm....this is going to be a tough one. For the first time I look at my entry and actually say to myself "Wow!" So to be optimistic I would predict 6+. But in the DPC world...tough call...5.7. Not an out of the box or anything, but certainly not my usual challenge entry type photo.
Rikki...you almost got arrested? I came about 3 inches from perhaps not certain death, but certainly permanent disfigurement and disability. Is this challenge hexed? |
