I browsed through the forums, but could not find discussion related to this. What are the options? I want elegant but less costly solution for creating own website. |

What exactly are you looking for?
Just a place to showcase your photos? Something more involved? Is this for a business or personal/familial?
Do you have someplace to host your site? Is it important that you have your own domain, or are you okay with a free site and a less professional appearance?
What constitutes "costly", both up-front, and more importantly recurring monthly costs?

It Really depends what your looking for and what it purpose is for. I design sites myself, I use a web hosting company called DirectNic. As far as building/uploading my sites I use Dreamweaver, its kinda a learning curve if your new to website building. There are templates availible all over the web if you want to go that route. I personally like building mine from scratch.
Edit: Heres one Im working on now Sprockets

like said before what exactly are you looking for for now I use smugmug and have learned alot with the whole webdesign thing lol still dont know anything or what I did to my site but I am happy with it. The pro version of smugmug which I have you can do just about anything to customize or design it the way you want sell your prints and set your own prices. Also theres a forum where you can ask question on the design or customization part. Also all the prints and payments are taken care of by them. Works out really cool. I think it cost now 150 a year but with unlimited photograph space which is cool, I also went with godaddy.com to get my own website name, a few months ago they had a special for the whole year.

There are as many options on the webthing as there are lenses to choose from LOL
My ISP provides me tons of space as part of my monthy subscription. So i bought a name from godaddy.com and have it redirected there. I use an old simple program (netobjects fusion) to do the website. one day i may upgrade but i don't feel like learning an new program. I upload this to my ISP's space and there ya go. My site is not interactive - i was webmaster of a non profit club with 550 members and no on every bother with the interactive crap.
I toyed with many ways to put a portfolio up there and chose pbase. i think smugmug might have been the better option, but hey, this works well for me.
lots of people use flash - i recomend against it. many places won't display flash (workplaces, coffee bars, libraries) so your site may not be seen - if it's not seen then your message is wasted. also, webcrawlers don't index flash sites.

Swish Sites are pretty cool way to get into Swish (poor mans flash).
Dynamic sites are as simple as editing text files for each of their pages... the static one are a little more complicated.
Requires SwishMax to compile/export to flash but for 117.00 one can grab SwishMax and a template and start futzing around like I did.

ED: I'm working my own design now that should be ready shortly but the templates definately give you a way to learn the coding...
Remember to turn that cheezy music off... :)

I did my own using Dreamweaver. It is not a difficult program to learn. I used the learn it in 24 hours series. I use qualityhostonline.com for my domain names and server space. Their tech support is second to none. Everytime I screw something up, they are able to help right away. As far as selling prints, I use PayPal. I have a businees account with them and they provide the code to copy and paste into your page. You can use their buttons or make your own. Its a pretty easy way to accept all forms of payment. As soon as someone buys something, I get an email to my mobile phone, call my photo lab and I am done. Easy money and it allows me to keep shooting. Good luck. There are tons of options out there.
