I posted the other day on how I was getting a refund and was gonna buy a 17-55 2.8 AF-S Beauty. Then I sobered up and bought the other lens I wanted the Tokina 12-24 and it got here today from b&h.
Now the dilemma. I had bid on a MINT like new in box with everything Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 D-AFS on ebay but lost to a higher amount 1000.00 my bid was 660.00. I just got an email saying the bidder that won the auction backed out and the seller is offering me the lens at 660.00.
Man I want it but need help to know if it's a really good deal as it sells new for 1200 and if you think I could get my money back if I sold it? |

Any Nikonians out there with a thought on this?
Or heck Canonians for that matter. |

Make sure the email is from eBay and not from a virtual front claiming to be. This, too, has the potential to be a scam.
Investigate before you act on it.

Yeah for sure! I will only use paypal for the protection it offers.
I believe it to be legit! This is part of the email
"Second Chance Offer
The seller is making this Second Chance Offer because the high bidder was either unable to complete the transaction or the seller has a duplicate item for sale.
The selling of this item through Second Chance Offer is in compliance with eBay policy; you will be able to exchange feedback with the seller and will be eligible for all eBay services associated with a transaction, such as fraud protection
eBay does not charge an Insertion Fee to send a Second Chance Offer. Sellers pay only the Final Value Fee when the offer is accepted."

I've got it, love it and would give the $1200 all over again. It is my favorite portrait lens, and everything is crystal clear every time. And look on the upside...if you don't like it, ebay it. It will bring more than $660.

We do "second chances" all the time in our bookselling. A surprising number of high bidders fail/refuse to complete the transaction. It's a standard part of e-bay procedures. Sure, there are scammers out there, but a "second chance" offer is not, in and of itself, necessarily suspicious.

I was bidding on a dressage saddle a few weeks ago and received the same message, incl. a familiar layout, logo, assurances etc., which turned out be a well-made fake. What gave it away, was the missing background colour of part of the message page and the request to contact the seller directly.
Needless to say, I did not comply with that request and did the opposite.

If there is any doubt as to the authenticity of the offer, forward the email to spoof@ebay.com. They will respond, usually within a day, advising you of the authenticity. |

I am following up with ebay but I wanted to let you all know first.
The Second chance email is either a scam or a technical glitch. I believe the former. I sent a reply to 2 emails one through ebay and the other one, I replied to the email sent to my work email. The only reply I received was from the ebay this is the email.
"Sorry that sold last Friday and shipped Monday. Seems there is an issue with eBay and 2nd chance offers..."
SO BEWARE EVIL LURKS
Thanks All!

Scam...If you read the second chance letter closely you may find the ol shipping from overseas western union money only scam... I have seen this twice on lenses that I have bid on but did not win. |
