Can someone explain how a score is "validated" and why it has an effect on the final score received?
Thanks.

Pretty sure many of the voters didn't read the challenge description : "It doesn't have to be warm and fuzzy, just something that is comforting to you"
I think some photo's may be getting low scores because their subject may not be universally comforting -- but that wasn't the challenge description. Can you tell I think my shot fits this category? :)

Ooops - correction - I'm now at a 4.5. I'll still trade for a 5.0, though. |

i took a couple of hits for "not meeting the challenge" from a few people on my last one. they were slightly entertaining and worth a good laugh but i also got a lot of great advice.
and thanks to that advice i have achieved the following success this time.

Actually, you are quite correct. I did go through all the thumbnails, and one stood out to me as being the most freakiest photo I have seen to date on the site. LOL....I will leave comment on that one but won't comment on it further to give it away, but WHEW what a photo that is! LOL.... I just simply couldn't get past voting 11% of the challenge entries so I just stopped. I think this is a first for me, LOL..but there have been many firsts for me at DPC so this is really just one more :)

Rose, I looked at the average vote you give out, and it's sitting around 4.8 somewhere, so I guess you're a hard one to please. (Seems like you are a bit harder on others than you would like them to score yours?) I won't push you into voting this Challenge, as I don't want my score to dip any lower. :) But I am certain that there are a good deal MORE than 20% of decent entries in this Challenge. I'm more than halfway through and have found some lovely images in there...well worth commenting on. |
I have also voted many more times then have received votes, and have commented many more times then received (thankfully, as I don't relish getting comments..LOL). I believe somewhere in there it balances itself out.
Am I hard to please? Sure I am. Everyone here at DPC is hard pressed when voting IMO. I don't think anyone runs around giving out 50% tens in each challenge. But I mean, c'mon. To me? On technicals alone, nevermind appeal, a lot of the entries are not up to par. And I am not the only one saying so.
A lot of people tend to judge others on these piddly little numbers in profiles when they don't like what another says. On many threads I have seen similar responses to those some don't agree with. It's a shame. I don't bother looking at profiles most of the time unless I am looking for a photo. I really doubt the numbers game matters all that much in the grand scheme of things, and when there comes a time that it "really" does matter, I am sure SC will be right on it. :) Until then, a "voting average" isn't the be all and end all of ones participation. The average depends on many things including how many challenges one votes on, on how many photos are voted on in any given challenge, and in what appeals to me in how I vote, etc. Honing in on that number is really an annoying habit more than anything else. Nothing is really gained by throwing that in anyone's face. And if my average was higher, would you have said anything? Nope. I doubt it. :)
I will also mention that when I vote? The winning photos are usually those who have the tens, nines, and eights I give out. So, hard or not, I am pretty accurate with the votes I give and they seem to coincide quite nicely with others who vote as well.
Rose

Stuffed up "BIG" this time, as I forget to change my title, re the feelings, emotions, and the "comfort" thing to why I submitted my entry.....
I was just so excited to think I had a reasonable image to enter, I later realized that many voters wouldn't get it, or have the same feelings as me, re "WHY" I submitted my entry.....We live & learn, so I guess thats good.....

My Comfort entry was doing so well last night - not it has sunk down in the 5's.
It is really a strange voting pattern - there will be quite a few high scores and then someone will knock it with a 2 or a 3.
It seems that some people that are voting might not have read the challenge description:
This doesn't have to be fluffy. Shoot something that comforts you.
You were supposed to take a picture of something that comforts YOU - it doesn't have to be comforting to everyone. |

This is just my second challenge entry, I was really unsure about the picture before posting thinking it may not go down well, but figured I liked it so may as well.
I'm pretty pleased with the feedback so far, though have a few negative comments that have pushed the average down. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

Ok my score has been on a rollercoaster, I guess they love it or hate it, my lowest has been a 4.7 and my highest, where it currently is sitting is 5.2. I must feed my update addiction though so I see every up and down vote, its almost maddening!..... |

Is the only place voting info is available on the Home Page > Upper Left Corner > under "My Submission"?
This is the box that has a small image of my pic. The current voting Stats are listed and there is an Update Button on the bottom.
This is my first challenge and I'm not sure how people are getting more detailed info.
ie.....

they are obsesive and keep track of their votes, ie: spreadsheet of score changes vs votes will give you an aprox vote of each vote given.
Yes its the only place you can view your score in progress. |

Thanks Kivet - while I am becoming addicted to the Update Button - not quite obsessed enough to track everything in a spreadsheet .... yet.
I do notice that when my vote drops I start getting cranky. Trying not to take it out on the family. It's going to be a long week!!!

Up & down still...but I'll take it, with hope that it takes a nice litle upward bounce at the end of voting. :)

My first time.. started out with a 6.125 (which I guess translates to six 6s and one 7). Downhill from there. I have 4 comments but I wish I had many more although I can't complain 'cus I didn't leave many either.

I don't see an update button, I just refresh at every XX:11 or so.
