Anyone out there got a creative side?

I want to replace my plain jane rural mailbox with one that has a photographic theme - i have seen other people do trains, hot rods cars, tractors, barns, etc.

I will be opening a home studio and cannot put up a sign - but I can get creative with my mail box - a camera on a tripod is my idea - i can probably due the tripod thing, but how to create the camera mail box is where i am getting stuck...

9' tall mailbox that reads "Air Mail" on the side.

Never thought about it but you need something stylised a little, cause an slr just looks like a plain box :-). How about one of those old 8x10 view cameras with the bellows - they really are just a box?

Hit the B&H website for a few models. Maybe steal the side view for both sides and do flat front, back & bottom - not sure about the top.

I am guessing you are trying to push the limit on local town zoning rules :-)) Wonder if they would object to writing on the mailbox?:-)

You can buy mailboxes that are round (like a tube). Get one of those, and make it into a lens, and just build a camera to mount to the back of it. Then build the "tripod" out of three pipes, set in concrete and with a small mounting plate welded on top.

What I was thinking, using a jigsaw, cut a camera body out of a piece of 2x6 wood with a couple special cut pieces for the grip part and a small piece for the viewfinder. I would exaggerate the size just a bit for visual reasons.

For the lens (and this is where the mail would go in) get some short scrap pieces of different large pvc pipes (white of course) like 6 inch diameter, then step down to a 4 inch diameter, then maybe a 3 inch to make a big lens kinda like a 600mm F4. To close off the gaps you could use 1 inch plywood cut to fit the different diameters. Then make a plywood "lenscap" with a hinge on the bottom to open/close. You could even make a tripod mount for the lens.

Damn, this sounds fun, I should make my own.

you could just get a 600L and rip the internals out... and then put a door on the front =]

i went in search of mailbox plans ... to see if i could find something similar to what i was seeign in my brain...

Kirbic has the right idea.. with the round mailbox as the lens and the body of the camera a rectangle that is painted to match the camera that you can see it as.

The other way would be to make a rectangle that the mail gets delivered in one end. make a "lens" to firmly attach to the flag... and at the "back" (actually when looking at the mail in side would be the left side) put one of your photos behind plexiglass (and sealed) to simulate the viewer on the back of the dslr, use bits from the lumber yard like the rounded fillers for holes and washers to be the dials and buttons on the camera

Bear in mind that your Postmaster has to approve your design. Believe it or not. It's in the laws...

I like this one, however, I think there is a lot of room for improvement; starting with losing the center, wooden post and relying solely on a tripod.

I only keep you in mind when I'm dreaming of the
day I can take shots as good as you. ;)

Hate to say this but really cute ones are extra points for mailbox baseball players.

Then a couple of large diameter galvanised fence posts disguised as studio lights on each side of the camera/mailbox might be needed and will add to the effect.

YOu all have some great ideas!
I ahve to behave some, as Bear says, the postmaster has the last say. Also, my mail box is across the road from my house and i don't want something too over the top.

We don't have any of the mailbox baseball types around here, but i live on a state road and in 6 years I'm on my third mailbox - doors seem to be the weak point, but when they plow snow the trucks are moving and that snow has some serious force when it hits the mailbox. Last time it happended it took me 4 days to get a new box up - so no mail for 4 days.

I like the idea of a view camera and perhaps even black cloth or plastic ( I have some landscape fabric) - let it blow in the wind as the cars pass.

A paper box could be a studio light...perhaps with a strobe in it...a small one...

Maybe you could also paint your driveway to resemble a strip of negatives...
=o
