I have been shooting concert for 3 years now, and I just love it! I love being able to be out in front of the crowd, with all of that energy. I love being able to catch the expressions and feelings that the performers exude when they are performing. It's such and awesome rush! Plus, I feel pretty damn good when people ask "What do you do for a living?" I get to tell them I am a photographer and I also get to shoot concerts! It's not something many people get to do.
I am sure this was done before... but I haven't seen it for awhile. I know that there are quite a few of you who take concert photos or live music (whatever you will). I just added a new folder to my portfolio, to showcase some of my faves from the past 3 years of shooting concerts. I will be adding more here and there. I have a few shows that I didn't get to edit for the web... so in a the next day or so. I also have some shows coming up, so I will post them too!
Add your own here, or direct us to your folder... let's share some comments and see what others have done. Maybe it will give us some ideas.
These are 2 of my favorite:

I get to do my first gig shoot ever in about 2 weeks for my brother's band. Should be interesting as they are playing in an Irish pub with a reputation for letting their hair hang down.
Mind you, with a max ISO 400 to play with but a fast lens (f2.8 from 35mm to 432mm focal equiv) this could be an interesting gig. Maybe I will just do the front of house mixing instead - not!

Wow, where do I start?! ;-)
You can see loads more on my blog here: //eyesopenmusic.blogspot.com/ (warning... current challenge shot is near the top)
or on my website here which is about to be relaunched in a few days so it's a bit out of date at the moment: //www.EyesOpen.co.uk
Things are going well at the moment... I'm shooting for a major drinks company who sponsors rock bands so I get to go backstage and onstage with them, including at Download Festival!
I was recently headhunted for a new photo agency which specialises in gig photography, getting accreditation just got a whole load easier.
I'm getting loads of extra work from the contacts I've been building up, and one of my photos is going to be on the cover of the main jazz UK magazine in a couple of months. A USA guitar magazine might also use some of my photos. Not bad bearing in mind I've been doing this for less than a year!

Bobster - How do you get your name out there like that?
For the local arena I shoot for, I don't get paid. It's basically for my portfolio. I also have little rights to my photos... which really sucks! I have had lots of people ask to buy prints, and I can't sell them.
For the Croc Rock, I have full rights to all of my photos which is nice, but I don't feel my images are good enough from there to sell. Since there hardly any lighting in the club... my pictures often come out grainy. I don't have a fast enough lens for it....yet! I was getting paid by the club, but it was only $50 - well that plus all the shows I wanted to attend were free! LoL
I would like to get my name out and start shooting more bands and more band promos.... but I have no idea on how to go about doing so. My cousin had a local well known band, and I shot for them a few times.... but they don't have the money to pay for my time and prints. Not only that but my cousin left. The lead singer of the band actually contacted me the other day and asked if I would shoot for them again, but told me that they couldn't afford to pay me. Will it take doing a few small freebies to get my name out there?
Thanks a Bunch!
Lorrie

I've only done it from the crowd.. but here are a couple of mine. This is something I'd LOVE to get into when I get a few faster lenses. I went to a concert a couple weeks ago that I would have loved to take pictures at, but cameras weren't allowed.

These are from the Van der Graaf Generator tour last year - I was the monitor engineer, so usually had this -
- view. Yes, that's 'work'.
We played some silly places, like this Graeco-Roman theatre in Taormina, Sicily -
And here's a few of the moodier views from my workplace, at various venues:

That's a pretty long question to answer... I put a lot of tips on my blog, check it out!
Basically, I took loads of photos at festivals without a press pass, but making sure I got loads of good reportage shots of people and atmosphere. I also got involved with local magazines, and shot local news and gigs. I then got The Guardian interested on the strength of my shots from a festival. I won a photo competition organised by that festival and got to work for The Guardian the following year at that festival. Based on that work, I did free work for a website for loads of other festivals in the summer of last year. Because of one particular rock festival I did, I was approached by the sponsor of one of the bands involved who are connected with other very high-profile bands which gives me personal access to loads of tour managers and bands. I also network a lot with bands at festivals. In general, I make use of every opportunity I possibly can and work VERY hard. The main advice I can give is to shoot loads of unsigned bands to get your portfolio and technique up-to-scratch and to make sure your reportage photography is strong.

Very nice, but I have an irresistible urge to turn it 90 degrees anti-clockwise.
