I've spent this past weekend at Breckenridge, CO. On saturday, I stepped on the skis for the first time since 1991... I figured out I haven't forgotten how to do that and on Sunday had my Canon around my neck trying to capture some good action. 70-200 was a bit too much to ski with, so I opted for 28-135mm IS lens.
Here is the sampler of what I was able to capture (actual images, only a few were even cropped):

(Here you can gauge where I was standing while taking these- about one meter from the edge of the half pipe):
and sometimes they came too close for comfort:
Edit: I'll add the exif data later.

Nice shots.
This one could be really good, but it's a little tight as far as composition goes - a wider angle and maybe a flash would have been great
I like this one too, good stop motion:

Thanks!
I was turning the barrel with the hand in a rather thick glove - I know, no excuse, good photographer would have sacrifised his fingers for a good shot! The first one you mentioned is @47mm, lens could do 28mm, so I could have done better. Now I think I was too close...
There were some skiers in the half-pipe, too:

Nice photographs. Where did you lodge at? Wife and I went in 1999 and lodged at Beaver Run. It was nice one we got use to the altitude.

We were at Village @ Breckenridge, right below Beaver Run. I hated the fact that we were there for 3 days only. I'll be back next year, for at least a week. The only problem was the thin air, but not a big one.

The shots are lacking but that is not your fault. It appears you are in the smaller park... I'd suggest going to the Freeway Terrain park where the riding talent is so much better. Its so much easier to get a good photo when the riders are getting more amplitude.
It looks like you had a good spot on the deck... is 28mm the widest you have? If you have something wider I would use that also... to give a little more perspective to the shot.
I was actually at Breck at the end of Januaray and had the fortune of seeing a few big name riders including the recent Olympic gold medalist :) If you're interested, you can see some of my pics at the link below. All the half-pipe photos are from my recent trip to Breck and I used either a 15mm or 8mm while I was standing on the deck of the half-pipe.
Snow/Skate/Wake
I acutally just looked at the lenses you have listed and I'd suggest the Sigma 18-50mm (I think thats what I saw) the 8mm you have wouldnt be bad... you'd just have to prefocus... or at least I dont think that is an af lens.

Russel,
wonderful shots you have there!
I agree that I needed a wider angle... but I had to choose among all listed and picked 28-135 for its range. I'm back in Austin now, and the next time I see snow will be next winter, when I go to Colorado again :-( |

I feel your pain... I'm in Iraq until this summer... I just happened to go to CO on leave this past January. I'm moving out to Denver this September though... so hit me up when you come out next year. |
