Just past $300 from all combine sites. I have not uploaded huge amounts like some of the others, but I've collected a couple checks :) Most are only 3 megapixel images and only a couple with the *ist DS.

I sold about $2000 in Jan. and about $1000 since. Some of that last 1k was partly print sales though.

I was rejected by shutterstock also, without any good reason. I still feel the pain:)

In order of earnings :
1)Shutterstock
2)Dreamstime
3)iStock

Shutterstock has accepted almost all my submissions, iStock and Dreamstime are a bit picky.

I also have pictures up at BigStockPhoto, CanStockPhoto and Fotolia but almost no sales there, so I've decided to stop uploading to those and concentrate on the first three.

The only one really going for me is Shutterstock. I've got about 100 pics and got $40 dollars this month - which i am landed about! My only worry is that some photos seem to have a very limited shelf life, getting a fair few downloads in the first week, then nothing. Anyone else experiencing this?

Well that is very true on shutterstock, as I think many people search by 'newest added'. On a given day, half the images downloaded from my portfolio are new ones, and the other half are old ones. So if you are looking for a long term average of your shutterstock earnings, it will be less than what you are earning right after you submit. But it is still good, I am seeing downloads on photos I uploaded a long time ago as well.

I'm just starting to get more active with stock photography. I like dreamstime and have just started with istockphoto and canstock. I think I'm permanently banned from shutterstock; It's been close to a year, and I'm banned from entering their website!

Why are you banded from ShutterStock? is it because you never got the 10 images accepted? I think if you want to try again you can just contact support!

Yes, I wasn't accepted first go round and told to wait six months. I believe that was last May. When I try again, I can't enter the site. It's okay though; when time permits I'm going to try harder to get more accepted on dreamstime.
02/28/2006 08:21:10 AM · #38
that sounds a little extreme... I would try again if I were you. Their upload system is really simple, and it is little extra effort for images you are allready submitting, and a lot of income (relative to the other sites)

I just read on the Shutterstock forums if you have waited your 3 months and want to try again and cannot get back on the website just contact support and they will retest your account for you!

support@shutterstock.com

I dont upload to any site. Photo buyers do searches to find me then send an email "hey do you have ....." In Jan I was getting a new list every few days of photos wanted. If I didn't have it I would go get it. I'm sure alot of people were getting these lists. I only got $250-350 per photo but I don't think you can expect much more for text book photos. I make more from prints when I get something good. I have made $560 from THIS print.(That by the way did terible in a challenge.)

That is true. If you email them, uploading privileges will be re-instated. However, like I mentioned above, you still run the risk of getting a cranky reviewer who's eye glass prescription needs updating, and then you will need to wait 3 months again. :o) FWIW, I sent them a somewhat nasty / somewhat constructive criticism email last night. I don't expect a response (outside of maybe some canned "thank you for your concerns..." garbage) but it did make me feel a little better. Hey, if NOBODY complains, they'll never learn!

All I am saying is Sutterstock is worth a second try for all the money you can be making!

This is not an attack or rant, but merely a question for all.

Out of this entire forum, there is only 2 or so people who claim to be making any type of real money with these stock photo websites. By real money I mean respectable, but nothing to retire on. I have refused to participate in these websites. I feel that getting less than 40 cents or whatever some pay for my photos is unacceptable. I feel that it cheapens photography in general. There are beutiful pictures on every one of these sites and the photogrpahers are getting pennies. These photos are art, and if people want your art they should pay what its worth. Im not going to sell my photos for $10,000/print, but I feel if someone likes it, they should spend a little more than pocket change to have it. These websites are making it so easy for companies to get great stock photos at the expense of the photographers who make them. Are there others who agree with me? Am I missing the boat on financial opportunity?

Am I missing the boat on financial opportunity?

In a word, yes. Shooting stock is the ultimate way for photographers of all levels to make passive income for a long time. Do you get a lot of money per download? No. Can you make a lot of money off of a single given picture? Absolutely! There are photos on istock that have been downloaded over 2000 times. The photographer took the shot, did their editing, uploaded, and at that point their work was essentially done. Then they get to sit back and see their work make $1k, $2k, $3k etc on up over the course of a few months to a few years. You are looking at your work like it was a Porche--high dollar / low sales volume. But Chevy makes a lot more off of a Cavalier at 1/8 the price of a Porche (I'm guessing on that figure, but you get the idea). Personally, I LOVE the idea that the work I do this weekend may wind up making me money 2 years from now, and all I have to do is collect the money. If you want to make your own site and sell stock for several hundred $$ per shot, go for it. I applaud all who do that. But me? I think the stock sites offer a tremendous service that I do not have the time or inclination to take on. To each his own--just my $.02.

I'm still mad at Shutterstock, though. :o)

I look at is as supply and demand.
Everyone with a digital camera and some practice can produce stock photos that will sell. Just look at the sheer numbers of microstock sites and the amount of imagery they have. Prices of RF images are bound to drop.
I do not consider the generic RF stock imagery to be an artform. It's being produced in too large quantities.
Show me one unique RF image from a microstock site.
Personally, I do not upload any images I wouldn't be able to reproduce within the hour and I really don't give a #*?! about most of my uploads.
I'm in it for the fun, not for the the cash.
Is photography as an art going down the drain ? On the internet, I think it is...

Firstly an image is only worth what people will pay for it. If the going rate is $.20 then that is what it is worth.

But $.20, when sold many times isn't pennies anymore.
I have over 1000 images on Alamy, and over 1000 images on the micros.

I make almost exactly the same amount of $/picture/year on Alamy (most RM pictures) as I do on shutterstock (RF images) alone. However I have the micro stock images on many sites, so in the end they are making me double what I earn with my alamy images.

For me I look at the income I make from an image at the end of the year, not at the end of an individual sale. From this standpoint, my images are apparently worth more on the micros.

I think both macro and micro have a place and I am going to keep submitting to both.
