These are terrible photos because I had to use digital zoom to capture it but this hawk (falcon?) was hanging out in the little park adjacent to Kennedy Plaza (the bus terminal)in Providence, Rhode Island (Southeastern New England). Can anyone id it for me. It was very relaxed and didn't mind being stared at by several people in the park. It scared the hell out of a flock of pigeons but didn't show much interest in them. It seemed fairly young to me. It was perched in a small tree about 10 feet over my head. After a few minutes of being gawked at it flew to another tree and then east toward the mall.

That's what this dude from California thought it looked like but he didn't think they are found in these parts.

It did have a beautiful rusty colored tail. You can't totally tell from the photo. Do you think I'm right about it being a young one?

could even be an adult, but definitely a red-tailed hawk. I've seen a lot living in Michigan

I just did some quick research and they are considered to be abundant in Rhode Island. I've seen plenty of hawks (or falcons?) in the area but usually flying over the wooded areas along the highway. Once there was a hawk (falcon?) feasting on a crow in a tree in the empty lot adjacent to my house. I lived in an inner city neighborhood at the time. That was a pretty dramatic sighting.

Yup - Redtail. They are the most common hawk and found everywhere.

Plenty of Red-Tailed Hawks in Providence; I saw them all the time when I was at Brown.

I'd go with Red Tail. The Audubon Guide says that they are the most common hawk in the US, and the map is shaded from coast to coast to show the range.
