Does anybody else notice every time Rikki gets "hammered" his next posted score is invariably higher?

I have hovered around the 5.7-5.8 mark for the last few days. I was hoping for better, but I spose about 600 others would have been as well.

Why do people give 1's .. that's what I got for the last 3 votes.... my photo isn't fantastic but it is creative (IMO) and not too badly photographed.. I can't imagine giving out 1's.... it's not going to affect my score greatly and I am not even close to landing in the top 50% but people who give 1's with no comments are .....

Kinda liked it better when it was over 6.4 but at least it's bounced back from the 6.0 two days ago. I think I predicted a 5.5 so this baby is overacheiving!

okay....I am a newbie and prepared to get hammered for this comment but, I gave out about 20 1's in this challenge and haven't commented on any. It's extremely difficult to comment on something that has no merit (to me.) Note: no merit to ME! I not saying that the images I voted "1" have no merit to others, they just don't speak to me ... at all.

I didn't vote "1" because a photo wasn't the "kinda thing I like." I voted "1" because I could find no way to justify voting the image a "2."

Now, I can promise that I spent atleast 6 hours voting on this challenge....probably more..... I sorted photographs and revised my votes then re-revised them once again. I just don't have time to comment on all the photographs and to me the "1's" deserve the least amount of it. The shots I voted one on seemed like they were entered just to enter...snapshots....a " hey I took this photograph this week and I can convert it to a duotone (which many weren't) and enter this challenge."

I joined dpchallenge this week after lurking around for a bit. Admittedly, previous to joining, I mainly just checked the challenge winners photo's. There have been A LOT of incredible images posted here. Thus, I was inspired to join. Since I entered this challenge I felt compelled to vote on every image and I did. I am trying to comment on the ones that I think I have something to offer that can be offered in a sentence or two. A "hey, love the composition, but I might tweak this a little" kind of thing.

Now I admit, I did give a few "Great Shot" comments which I realize are as helpful as "Boy, that stinks." The difference is that, in my opinion, the compliment doesn't beg the question "explain why" which the criticism screams....and I just don't have that much time ....

IMHO, if 1s are to be given, fine that's your prerogative and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. However, might I suggest that reasons be given as to why a 1 was scored. Sure it's easy to comment on a wonderful photo "Wow this looks amazing" or something along those lines. But let's take a step back for a second and think, why comment on a great photo when the site is all about learning and the ones that really need the help are the ones that score lower? I know it's hard to do but I often try to come up with something constructive. Even if it's something like, "This image is just too small. Chalk it up to experience and make it larger the next time" or "This image doesn't hold my attention for too long. An improvement could be..."

Just my two cents of course.

Thanks Rikki!!! I am brand new to photography and admit I know next to nothing about it. When I look at my own pictures I can tell they are not near the quality of the ones that score well on this site. I am here for the comments. It is very disheartening to hear people say:

I managed to voted on every photo in this challenge, never giving less than 4 on any shot..( very, very few below 5, mostly 7 and aboves). I know my eye is different than most, because I can almost always find something good in ones work. I have not given many comments due to the fact that I am not experienced in the technical aspects, just what I see as an amatuer.
I believe it is the people like us who need the comments so as to learn the technical issues of a fundamently good shot.
