I'm not even certain what a Duotone is, though at one point in time I thought I did...

This is my first entry, and my first photography anything, so I guess that is okay, yes?

02/26/2006 04:20:16 PM · #279
Well, I guess someone thought it wouldn't be fun if I already hit my prediction. A 1-vote later, I'm back to 6.23
02/26/2006 04:24:41 PM · #280
trolls are out... mine dropped by .1 today :(
02/26/2006 04:36:31 PM · #281
As did mine...it's amazing how some people will score all sorts of stuff low.
02/26/2006 04:44:32 PM · #282
mine has gone from 6.19 to 6.13 in the last couple of hours..are some people purposely scoring low to make theirs look better?..maybe mine is just not so good :(
02/26/2006 04:47:00 PM · #283
seems like it ;( anyway, from experience a few low ball scores wont matter if your image is good... it just bugs thats all ;)

I think you know what a duotone is. Don't I remember this very nice one from you:

When I was growing up my mother worked for a printing company that occasionally did duotone printing. It was the way they produced high quality printed images of black and white photographs. They ran the sheets through the press twice. The first run was done with black ink, the second with either a different black or a dark color. The double printing gave them much richer blacks than they could achieve with a single press run. If the second ink was color, they could produce what looked like toned photographs.

If you want to see some real printed duotones, buy a copy of Lenswork magazine. It is now printed entirely with the duotone process. I think their printing is great, much better than most photo magazines. See:

//lenswork.com/lwqimproved.htm

Of course, nothing shown on the web is a real (printed) duotone. What we are talking about for this assignment are images that imitate the look of duotone printed images. There are only a few photos submitted for this assignment that don't meet my idea of what a duotone is. Anything that looks like a black and white photo or a toned black and white photo is fine. Although I think typical duotones are characterized by rich blacks and subtle toning, I'm not rejecting the high-key images or the very strongly colored ones.

I've been impressed by the batch. There are a lot of images I like very much.

Heading towards my worst score ever. Though I've gotten some very helpful comments/advice from some great people about what I did wrong. I think I'll take a week off after this to re-group before I try again.

I hit a slump before and took a couple of weeks off. After my vacation and tim off of DPC, I was able to string up great scores ;)
It works ;)

Thanks Dan,
That was very interesting and educational. I had very slight idea what duotone was, but seems like I̢۪m doing OK with my entry.

i've not done very well at about 4.7 but what i'm lacking in points i'm making up for in very good comments, very helpful, just proves what a great site this is first i would never have gone and got this image and second i will be able to take a better one next time :)

Ahhhh...so that's what a Duotone looks like. So, maybe I did know? (kidding, of course)

I used a similar degree of coloring in my image but recieved a comment saying that it wasn't a true Duotone so I assume other voters agree with the commentor and are hitting the image on that. Silly people...

I like the image and hoped it would get a more fair shake then its Avg Vote:5.7000 and you know what that means? ....Another angry letter to The New York Times.

Cheers!

I'll never understand people who rate images significantly lower than they should be. To drop this much I must have gotten several 2's.

Been slowly sinking all weekend :( Many nice pics in this challenge.

I guess I should be stoked as this is my first challenge and I think my score is respectable (from what I've read on this post); but, I'm confused. I keep getting great comments yet my score keeps sinking. Oh well, LOL, thanks for the comments!

That is a great score for anyone on any post... so congrats on it being your first.

BTW, I wonder what the record is for posts on a "Score thread." We're up to page 12!
