I've heard that such an adapter is available. If I had access to some very nice FD lenses at bargin basement prices, would the adapter work and be worthwhile? I'm thinking especially of faster (1.8) type lenses. I'm assuming autofocus wouldn't work?

FD mount lenses are not AF lenses. Some lenses i've heard cannot be adapted to EF. I had asked on FM before about the 85L 1.2 FD and I was told that was one of the lenses that could not be put onto EF. I'm not sure which can and which cannot be adapted. |

My understandng is that there is a Canon adapter and other adapters. It is said that the Canon quality is worth the extra money.
There is a difference in location of the "film plane", so the FD lenses apparently will not focus to infinity on EOS cameras (as well, they won't auto-focus either.)

It seems attractive but it's not a good idea. Canon made an adaptor, but it is discuntinued. It does sometimes show up on ebay. Bottom line, it degrades optical performance, and changes the effective focal length.
For super-telephoto lenses, there is a guy in Iowa who just announced that he can convert an FD-mount lens to EOS, for about $75. That price is sure to rise, I cannot see that he can make a profit at that price level. It's still only a good deal for expensive telephoto lenses, where the FD canon lenses are much cheaper than their EF descendants.

maybe he uses the nice glass for a few shots of his own - and sells them at a premium. then converts the mount as a kind of favor ;}
