Gary, go to the contest page and click " Guarda le foto di chi si è iscritto finora" and you can see what photos have been entered so far. That can maybe help you decide.

Hi Anastasia, yours are very beautiful. Like them, expecially the rope and the windows (so colourful...).
You have enjoyed Venezia and photography, I see.

Thanx Ron :)

Riponlady, that was a very good tip about getting up at 5:30 in the morning to go to St. Mark's square! We did it and mixed in amongst the professional photographers shooting there. There were National Geographic photographers there too, very impressive! Those guys walk around with equipment! Lenses sticking out of every nook and cranny :) And you were right, they didn't mind us shooting their models at all. We actually got hold of a couple of models ourselves and set them up in positions we wanted. Amazing shooting there in the morning light, I have so many good shots I don't know where to begin :) The funny thing is that all the masqueraded models are either German or French, no Italians at all. They come to Venice every year and parade around getting photographed and then they give you a card so you can send them the photos you took of them. They don't ask for money at all, they just liked being photographed.

So glad it was helpful! Unfortunately, we were there when we weren't so involved in photography and didn't make the most of it! Hopefully we will have the opportunity to go again. If anyone is interested, there is a travel group that uses "barges" (more like very small cruise ships) and they dock just 100 metres from St Mark's and you literally just walk down the gangplank and into the square. Great for those early morning pictures! The barge also sails out to Burrano etc and you can book 4/5 day trips. It's not cheap but not exhorbitant when youcan get all your meals on board and stay in the centre of Venice. If anyone is interested, PM me for the travel group's name ( I don't want to be accused of advertising on the site - and I have nothing to do with this company by the way - we just used them)

Hey...you both did well...

My girlfriend and I will be there in roughly two weeks...should be great. The only thing I'm worried about is my camera, but I'm sure it's the least of my worries.

Fabulous - and Pete and I are returning to Venice for our second visit in September...

Did you set up poses for any of the masked/ costumed ones or all absolutely candid? Just curious...

Great pics!

Mostly they were candids except for the one with the mirror and the one with the green ball.

Those are the two I was specifically wondering about! They work so well - did you just approach someone and ask them or had you pre-arranged or is that you or Nasti under that costume?

We just asked them. If you go very very early in the morning to Marco Square, even before it gets light, many professional photographers from magazines, newspapers etc will be there as well as lots of those costumed/masked people. They want to have their photos taken and usually you can ask them to stand or pose for you. They will give you a card with their email address and only ask if you could send them their phtoo later or link them to your gallery where you have posted the photos.

The funny part is that none of them were Italian, they were mostly German of French people who go to Venice each year at the carneval time to parade themselves around and have their photos taken.

We won't be going for Carnivale but that's good to know, thanks.

Yes I have read that most costumed/ masked folks these days are visitors, not locals... makes sense to me... locals will be either avoiding the crowds like the plague or busy working in their businesses making money from the tourists... no time to waste parading around in pretty outfits!!!

Now that we are able to show photos in 800px here I have updated and added to my Venice portfolio. The photos come over so much better at this size. I invite you to look at my Venice series.

If anyone is traveling to Venice in the near future give me a yell and I will give you any tips I know of! CheerZ!

I miss Venice greatly. The shots from Kiwiness are awsome. I was there on the first day of Carnival in 93. The ship I was on was moored in Trieste. I have longed to go back. If anybody gets the chance, go. Don't even think about it. The city is magical.
