For pictures to appear in a message do they have to be uploaded into my profile portfolio or can they be shown by linking to the files on my hosting site?

If they can be linked to, will they show at the size of the orginal image or will they be made into thumbnails that can be clicked on to bring up the original?

The software for this site is different from a lot of other forums I'm on and I've not found the info on how to post images yet.

Thanks

Mike

Yes to both...

Members can upload to portfolio space, registered users will only have challenge pics available.

We use the [ thumb]image number[/thumb] tag to link back to those images.

You can link back to an external site but it is frowned upon to link to large images as there still are dial-up (whatever that is) users on the site.

You can either link to or post pictures from another hosting site (if your hosting site permits such linking), but we ask that you not post full-sized images in the threads, as it messes up the format and costs everyone bandwidth.

DPC cannot generate a thumbnail image, but some hosting sites (e.g. pBase.com do) or you can do it yourself. Post the thumbnail image as a link to the full-sized image.

It is simpler if you put the image in a DPC Portfolio, as then you can use the "Insert Thumbnail" button and simply enter the Image_ID number at the very end of the image's URL.

Check the tutorials under the Learn menu -- I know there's one on using Forum Code to do what you want.

Here's what a well-made external link would look like, with Square Brackets [] where I have curly ones.

{url=//hostsite.com/image_url}{img}//hostsite.com/image-thumb_url.jpg{/img}{/url}

I just wish we could get an increase in the 25M portfolio limit.

I really don't want to delete pictures that people have commented on (and it's hard to figure out which ones those are without visiting all of the images) and so my portfolio is basically full. I have to delete something if I want to post anything.

So I'm stuck... I just link my photos to my website when I post here. Unfortunately, that means I don't get the kind of comments that I would normally get from DPC, but I'm stuck until they do something about it (increase the limit or give us better tools for managing our portfolio).

Thanks for the info.

I have my own site and domain so that parts no problem. Having been in computers since before 300 baud modems were hot and took over from accustical modems, I can understand the frustration that some people experience when they have to sit there waiting on a large file to show up on their screen. :D

If the best way is to use the portfolio, I guess I need to become a member so I can take advantage of it. This site has been well worth the price of admission already, even if I never got anything else of value.

Thanks again.

Maybe I got the terms mixed up... Is a member one that has paid or is that someone that has registered? I get so confused sometimes. :D

Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter now. I paid the annual fee last night to help support the site, so I should be able to take advantage of all the features... unless there's a secret place in the back I haven't found out about yet? ;)
