Some might call it the antichrist or god reincarnated. Pick one. :) |

Is this legal under Basic rules? (My guess is no.) |

Used properly (with some discretion) it is a godsend on high iso images. Overused it creates a plasticy feel to images, particularly people.
This shot is about as far as you want to go before things begin to look unreal.

Digital noise is inherent in all digital cameras to some extent. Some much more than others of course. Neat Image is one of many software applications designed to remove digital noise.

NI is EVIL...Evil I tell you...(when misused)
When you tink that it looks good back it off a bit and it will be right.

Use neatimage when you have a lot of noise in your image, mostly dark sky shots, anything with a shot that has a lot of noise. Don't over do it, but in general it smoothes noise artifacts out.
The app can probably do a lot more then smooth out your noise, although I haven't used it beyond that.
Rock on. :)

Here's an example of going too far
and that was just one pass, I was using it to illustrate something else (aren't those eyes amazing), so I didn't mess with it and fix it.

Like any tool it can and is misused by people, particularly here at DPC. That is the basis for this comment which overstates the concern by a country mile.
When used for its intended purpose NeatImage is one of the best, if not the best, noise reduction tools available. When used properly nobody would ever know that it had been used and your image will be of superior quality if it had noise in it in the first place.
NeatImage does a better job at artifact noise reduction than Photoshop CS2's new noise reduction filter.
I looked at your images and can see why people would suggest you might need it. I'm uncertain that is entirely the problem... looks like most of it might be .jpeg artifacts.
Noise reduction is a necessary tool and I recommend to obtain it. If not NeatImage(there is a free veriosn) then another one.

Neat Image is great but it's important to let people know what "going too far" is before they start to play with it...
My sample of how NI can make things look super fake
total overkill

On this one I went to far intentionally to get the look I wanted. It wasn't received on DPC to well, but it's turned into a family classic here. |
