I have a question for this vast knowledge base of photographers. The Nikon D200 kit I was recently able to purchase unexpectadely came with another 18-70mm Nikkor lens. I already had that with my D-70. A local camera shop offered me a used tamron 35-105(2.8), in trade. I get to use it for 10 days to see if i like it. I can not find any specs on their web site about it. Can anyone give me feedback from their experience. Is the trade worth it? Thank you in advance.

Well I have no experience with either lens, but I looked up each lens's price. They want to trade you a discontinued third party lens worth roughly $190 US used for the kit lens that sells for $340 US new.

Sounds like it's a great deal... for them. They get rid of an older lens that most people don't care about for a brand new Nikkor lens.

I wouldn't go for it myself. You may want to try to convince them of trading it for something like the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical. It's only $30 more. Offer to pay the balance.

Don't do it! Tell them you want a Tokina 12-24 for it.

That could be an option since you don't have a super-wide yet, but that lens is worth $500.

You could offer to pay the balance of $160. Now that would be something worth looking at.

Ok, I see your point, but Im not really losing here. I already have this lens. the one i would be trading is a duplicate.

Duplication does not reduce the value of an item. It may be of less value to you at this moment, but they are going to make a great deal to make money off of you.

Ok, Thank you all. I will at least use the lens for the 10 days, and then go get mine back...........I appreciate all of the advice

Ken has a very valid point.

If they won't budge for a better replacement lens, screw 'em. You could look into selling the lens on eBay. You might get more than $190 for it. Besides, the 35-105mm range overlaps with your remaining five lenses. Not much worth to you. I just know that they're trying to get rid of a used lens that has been sitting in their display case for a while.

For myself, I would sell the lens and bank the cash to get photo equipment that I really like rather than getting a used lens that I'm not even sure I'd use.

Have you looked into trading at //www.keh.com, good folks over there and you might just get a pretty good deal. Current listing for a *new* 18-70mm Nikkor are barley getting 180.00 on ebay...that might not pan out so well.

You can also find a review of the Tamron 35-105 here, on Photozone.

I use that site a lot as it is the most comprehensive, but soem of their rankings are, well, screwy at times. I have seen a lens move from 1.8 to 2.8 and back again in 2 weeks time. What one week is very good is so-so a month later.

They list the tamron SP24-135 as 2.65, average, but over at FredMiranda.com it is one of the best rated lenses of all lenses, even L glass. So that site is losing favor with me as being inaccurate and inconsistent.

Ok, since we seem to have a quarum, Ill put this out there. I need a fast, wide angle lens, for gymnastics. Flash is not an option for safety, and lighting at times can be challenging. Any Suggestions?
P.S. My portfolio here does not do my sports photos justice, as zi have not revisited sizing down to increase my portfolio.

either a 17-55 2.8 or a 50 1.8/85 1.8

I shot basketball with a 50 back in the day and it worked well. a 70-200 2.8 is popular with indoor sports shooters, or some use a prime (100, 200 or even the 85 1.8).

If you gotta go wide and fast, the options are somewhat limited. the tamron 17-35 is excellent, but not much 2.8 glass at the wide end. the sigma 18-50 2.8 is good, but a bit soft at 2.8. the new tamron SP17-50 2.8 should be very good, and sigma has a new 17-70 2.8-4.5 that might work.

Ok, so as we were talking about different options here, i was presented with a lovely surprise. my husband bought me a Tamron SP AF 28-75 xr Di. I am shooting a meet in the morning, so we will see how it measures up. I do use my 85 1.8, which is awesome, but at times is not wide enough.
