I need good advice on what camera to buy for approx. $600 in USA today. What would be the best choice in your opinion?

I'd agree on the D50. You can get the body and a lens.

The upcoming Canon S3 IS would be a strong contender IMO, especially now that the noise has been taken care of.

Or, if you want to stay with Canon, the 300D can be had under $500 on Ebay. Although the D50 is a great deal.

Hmmm, I just assumed a dslr.
I have Canons but recently tried a D50 while shooting with a fellow dpc member from San Diego. I think it feels nicer than the XT. I reviewed and edited the RAW images as well and I was pleasently surprised by the image quality as the consensus is that XT is better than the D50. I couldn't tell which was shot with a Nikon or with a Canon. They were all pretty darn good.
