I saw this on an Ebay add for a lens

UPC Code has been removed from box for promotional purpose

Can someone explain what it is? (bar code?) the lens is being sold as brand new though a US import so I guess I'd not be hit with a duty/tax bill? Would I need the UPC code if utilising the 1 year worldwide warranty?

A UPC code is like an EAN Number. Yes a Barcode.

It stands for Universal Product code. It's used to for scanning at the cash register fro inventory and pricing. Companies also use them for Rebates. It's the same thing as a bar code. No bar code would probably mean no warranty.

The UPC code was probably removed so they could claim a rebate. Unless you have the receipt for the original purchase, you may not have warranty coverage ... sounds just a little fishy to me.

A UPC code is a number issued by some agency (I forget where) which uniquely identifies the manufacturer and product; the bar code allows the use of scanners to input the info instead of typing in the number every time.

They work in conjunction with ISBN codes used for publications and recordings.

I believe there's a range of codes available for businesses to use internally, like the bar code stickers you'll see on some equipment, office furniture, and the like.

It was most likly removed so that the person selling it could get a rebate on it, then resale it as new. They may sell it for a little less than what they pay for it but with the rebate they sometimes end up making more. Pretty savy.

man General you beat me.

You don't need the UPC to register for warranty, just the serial number. Assuming it hasn't already been registered by someone else...

FYI, wikipedia.org is a great resource to learn about stuff like this. Check out their definition of UPC:

And don't miss the other most common use of the UPC acronym, the Unicorn Princess Clan
