I actually use both the viewfinder and LCD on my P&S. The problem I have with only using the viewfinder is the low angle shots. That's where the flip/swivel LCD comes in handy (read: keeps my dry and clean).
Back to the original topic, the DSLR will give you better imaging and quicker response for sure. I also agree with jbsmithana, check out the different models and make a decision based on what fits best for you. I would also suggest some of the online camera review sites. Most are unbiased and give you all the pros and cons. My favorite site is

That's about the only time I miss an LCD to frame a shot is shooting something low to the ground, like this:
I read in one of my Freeman Patterson photography books where he mentions a 45 degree angle viewer that he uses. Anyone familiar with that item, and if so where can you get one?
