Ok, so I have a challenge entry for Duotone. I get 2 comments, one person hates it, the other loves it. Variety it's the best. |

My best comment story as of late relates to my "heart challenge". I got the following comment:
"I hate Jordan almonds. I think they are tasteless and painful to eat.".
To which I could only think to myself, thanks for the personal opinion on nuts. You could have saved yourself some time and just kept that comment to yourself. It would have been nice to at least say something about the quality or lack there of for the photograph, but since nuts were in the shot, they felt the need to voice their disdain for Jordan almonds :). That comment was NOT marked as helpful.

Ok well i recived this one from the Broken challenge......
Not a very inspiring photo I'm afraid. I have to ask myself what are you trying to tell me (other than there are some broken speakers)?
WELL THE CHALLENGE IS CALLED BROKEN!! LMAO |

i love it when they get all artistic and intellectual on you...
"I am forced to question my very ideas about a broken speaker and wonder at wether there can truly be any serenity in a world were pictures such as this are taken." |

Or you could have just made stuff up about the speakers representing our voices and that this was a political statement. Maybe they would have bought it?

Very nice... This person gave you their opinion and you have to mock them in the forums... They are brand new here. Do you think they will want to stick around if they see this thread? Do you think they will still want to comment... |

It seems like a perfectly reasonable comment to me; that about sums up my reaction to the image as well. I'm sure you're as aware as the rest of us that it's not sufficient just to "shoot to fulfill the challenge" if you want to score well; the trick is to get some sort of emotion going, or a storyline, or some ephemeral beauty, something has to happen to make the image work.
When I was teaching photography, that's exactly the sort of question I'd ask my students; "What are you trying to tell me? Why did you do it THIS particular way?"
I think you do the commenter a disservice by mocking his comment, which I believe was well-intentioned and deserves to be marked "useful".
Robt.

I was shocked at the variations between monitors last week--I tried to show some of my portfolio to a couple of friends and finally understood some of the comments--the photos looked completely different, washed out, off color, even grainy depending on the screen resolution of the monitor. Noticed this with sensor dust also--seems the lower the screen resolution, the more evident the dust spots. I have no idea why. |

I am wondering if this needs to be a thread all to it self but I get the comment often ... now it could be that my monitors are off (callabrated weekly with Spyder Pro, Editing is done on a LCD and proofing on a CRT).
Folks need to stop and take a look every once and a while at the calabration bar at the bottom of the scoring page ... It's not perrfect... but if you are not seeing all of the boxes at the beginning AND end of the bar you need to adjust your monitor until you do...
the other thing that affects it is the balance of the monitor... my LCD is locked at 6500K and my CRT is about 6540K so they are pretty close to true... but if the monitor is out of color balance images on DPC and other sites will not be "correct"
Oh well my pet peeve for the day has been excercised... I feel better :)
