| I am thinking about starting an LLC or soemthing like that in order to have an official business name that I can use on Business cards and my website so does anyone know how I could find out whether or not the name I would like has already been licensed? |

| I have been thinking about doing the same thing, Mike, and I've run across this website. They offer a preliminary legal search for your potential business name as one of their packages, I believe. I have not dealt with these guys, however, and therefore cannot endorse them. |

Your state (if you are in the US) probably has this service available online. In Illinois, for example, I can go to //cdsprod.ilsos.net/corp.html to search for and file the name.

Check the laws in your state regarding all this, and the tax laws and how they affect you. There was a nice discussion of this in the PhotoBiz thread 1 (check it out here).
Why an LLC? If it is to limit your liabilily, then you certainly need to read the thread above and/or check with a lawyer. It has been ruled in court that an LLC has to meet certain standards to be able to shield the owner from liability.
Also, on the downside is the cost to set one up and as a legal entity is has no asssets and credit rating, so you have to kind of start from scratch.
Here in PA if hte business contains your name (with a few exceptions) that is all you need, so I chose that route - fast and cheap to get going, and one can avoid a business checking account as well as they checks are made out to you.
