Understanding the author's intended tone in their profiles and emails/posts are difficult so please do not take offense.
I just find it rather amusing at your lengthy diatribe in response to Ecce's PM.

I think Byron handled it perfectly and would welcome any critiques he wished to send my way.
Also, wtg Ecce for the public apology and congratulations on your ribbon.

Just a thought about the person who's comments are being raked over the coals -

I just finished reading the comments he's left. Well it's obvious that he has low tolerance for "setup" shots ... but that's his opinion. Regarding opinions, while he is direct and to the point, I found that I agreed with most of his observations, and saw some things that he pointed out that I hadn't thought of before. All in all, I think he was doing a service to the photographers whose photos he took the time to comment on.
Personally, I would welcome comments from him even though they might sting a little. If nothing else, it can give you another perspective to evaluate.

Absolutely.
No problem at all with his observations, opinions, or directiveness.
I just thought his tone a tad on the pompous side and made my eyes roll.
As I begin to enter challenges I hope for blunt comments as well as trying myself to comment more.

edit - too busy laughing and shaking my head to type properly

as i recall, reg users can vote on members challenges, just no enter them.
as far as i know, you cannot comment during a challenge if you don't vote 20% as the comments vanish - i think. Anyone know this for sure?

He registered here in July 05. No votes shown prolly cuase he is jut now getting active and those stats update only once or twice a week.

I like his style of commenting. I started that way but had to mellow a bit as the average DPCr found fault with them, too terse, too to the point.

I've commented without voting on a challenge before and the comments stayed.

I find that "No" and "Duh" comments not condusive to helping people become better photographers.
Just my opinion of course.

This is from ByronGates.
I have been called a pompous ass many times in my life, I'm ok with that. I agree that some of my comments, if I'm going to make them and I will, should be a lot more than "Duh" or "No" or any of the other short negative comments that I made. I believe DP is a great site. I wish I had had an outlet like this when I was a budding photographer. However, I shall continue my observations and comments in the future but with greater depth. If I give a low score, I will add a more pronounced comment.
I want to let every one know that Ecce Signum aka Andi McGill sent me the following PM this morning. I totally accept his apology, I congradulate him on his ribbon and wish him well. Several of you commented that all of this ranting was negative. I believe it is the spirit of learning. I have learned now that scoring and comments should and will be better thought out in the future, and Andi has learned that negative comments should be taken with a grain of salt. After seeing which image Andi entered, my thoughts are the same, I only wish I had left a more constructive. After reviewing his many other images, I truly believe him a photographer with a great eye.
In the end, Andi is an English gentleman. I truly respect him for coming clean.

Sincerely,
Byron Gates, Jr.

_________PM from Andi McGill AKA Ecce Signum

Mr.Byron,

I've slept and, feeling a little more sane I must apologise to you, both for my initial outburst via PM and then the 'thread'.
I'll not try to make excuses for my behaviour and feel the least I can do is write and apologise (I've also apologised in the thread).
I've also now marked your comment as helpful, because, well, its taught me a lesson.

Regards,
Andi
