I'm entering a local photo contest- I think I had posted some other shots a while back. Well I found this tree the other day on Surrender Road. The theme for the contest is "Preservation" This tree is on a battlefield that is on the way to the house where the peace treaty between the British and US was signed. I don't want to do the house because it's really not that exciting. And this tree really spoke preservation to me. THe fact that it's probably been standing there since before the Revolutionary War I think speaks volumes about preservation.
Anyhow, here are a few shots of that tree, I know they are similar but there is a little bit of a difference in them. I did convert them to black and white or sepia in psp and messed around with the lighting and clarity a bit.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Of the three I think the 2nd is the best due to the tree being completely in contrast with the sky. With the other two the tree is competing with the background forest/bushes.

A couple of things I find distracting though. The diagonal cloud going through the tree and the fact that the tree is quite central. There seems to be some texture in the foreground that could add interest if brought out a bit.

If you have a chance to re-shoot, a lower angle showing more of the foreground and less sky, and also a vantage point a little more to the right to make the tree less central.

Sorry, I got a little carried away with a critique.

Don't be sorry! I greatly appreciate the critique and that's what I'm wanting anyways.
I have to April 1st to enter something so I will definetly be reshooting. I have so many other shots I could also enter, but I keep coming back to this tree. I went back and reshot yesterday evening at sunset to see how it would be in color but it just didn't pop out to me. I'm going to on saturday at sunrise and see how that looks.
Thanks for the input!

now I like that bowran. I'm half tempted to load my daughter up and head back to the tree right now because the lighting is just right lol. I think I'm going to get it from the ground up more or less this time. I may walk to the other side of the field so I don't have all the trees in the background too.
So many options lol.

If you take more photos, make sure the DOF is shallow, so the background is blurred and does not make the image look busy. Also, try taking a few shots from near the tree looking up.
