I have just posted this open letter to the SC. Thanks to all of you that deserves it. No more update buttons for me for sure.
"Dear SC,
I hereby formally request an absolute cancelling of my account with DPC. I understand my pics used in challenges would stay and that is great, no problem. However, without even considering a refund or anything, I truelly wish for my membership to cease with immidiate effect.
Unfortunately I have lost my want to be in this community or even to be associated with it. I do not have to be even tempted to be part of a primative tribe of self consuming individuals as we have witnessed over the past few months. The change in character does not work for me. As I have said before, each to his own.
Your handling of a serious case of taking my work for derivitive purposes, not parody, and the general trend and mood at DPC makes me feel not only unwelcome but to say the least, dirty. The fact that SC, in our communications afterwards, admitted that no matter whether the so called parody/abusing of other people's work is legal or not, is not a concern because DPC can not be held accountable, only the individual, was a bigger problem than anticipated. My interpretation is that the mob can do what they want, be it wrong or right or at least risky, as long as 'I', DPC is okay.
DPC was great for me, I learned everything I know from them, making my loss even greater. But so be it. Thanks to the few remaining greats on DPC... Graphicfunk, goodman, messerscmidt, willie.. and such a few others.
Please respect my opinion and request and terminate every record, accept my history of challenges, with immidiate effect.
Dr PJ Venter." |

Why do people always make these things public? Just submit what you gotta submit then move on.
Anyway, didn't really know you much, but take it easy.

Ditto
Anyway she didn't steal your photo is is perfectly legal to use someone else's photo s a parody when you change it but you must make it known. Maybe it was forgotten. I think everyone needs to relax and enjoy the community.

There is no drama factor if you just deal with the person directly. No one will say "oh, poor you" or "I agree with you fully." This whole thing was started before in a fourm post when a PM would have probably worked just as well.
edit: Quoted the wrong reply.

He pissed no one off. He asked that his account be closed. |

FWIW, he didn't piss off anyone. He formally requested cancellation of his account, and his request was honored. We regret he feels that way, but nothing more we can do.
Edit: Too slow!

I guess if you feel the need to leave for what ever reason so be it. But to make a dramatic exit with a 'hey I'm leaving this place and it pretty much sucks now attitude' makes me wonder what the agenda of posting it? For the record I really liked your images, but a graceful bow out without the drama post would have been more tasteful.
Edit: Same here Kirbic!

Everyone seems so quick to dismiss his unhappiness, but I have noticed a number of top photographers who have closed their accounts here recently. I find that a bit disturbing.
Edit: Quite a few posts were added while I was typing this - I'm glad to see not everyone feels that way.

Shame.
I know the problem goes deeper, and I do understand.
At least I can wish you a Happy Birthday anyway!

Ahhh just people taking this stuff too seriously. We all just need to have a group hug.

Feeling misrepresented, I just wanted to make a statement to the tune that DPChallenge takes very seriously image-related issues of any kind and we do our best to address them quickly and to everyone's satisfaction. In this instance, a member of the Site Council PM'ed the person who used the image for parody and asked them to remove it. The user did so immediately, either upon receiving the PM or discovering that the photographer did not agree with her use.
It is very unfortunate that the issue dissolved into what it did as DocPJ's work was well-appreciated here.

His account was closed as he requested it in a ticket (as karmat & kirbic mentioned). I'm just trying to stay on top of things around here! |

Is this still stemming back to when I used someone's picture?
Or is this a new case? Cuz I thought that was over with.

It is stemmng back to that, quite unfortunately. Don't feel bad; he blew this WAY out of proportion, and you handled his less-than tactful approach admirably well, with tact and aplomb.

I agree that it is disturbing. I can't count how many photogs that I really admired when I started here who have left. It's sad when you go to check out the profiles of your favorites to find they no longer exist. His work will be missed. I'm unaware of the situation but it must have really upset him to the point that he felt he had to leave.

That's what happens, it's natural, it's evolution. You start here, you know nothing, then some just move on...it's no big deal.
Obviously you aren't going to keep everyone happy -- people find other places, more challenging places, places where their works are more appreciated, or they can further develop their 'thing' (whatever that may be -- another forum, a local, in-person photography group or whatever), and they go there...it's just how it is.

You'll be missed! I kind of know where you'r comming from, but i also agree with almost everything posted so far. I am here for the photography, and hopefully to meet a couple people along the way. As your skill increases, i assume your intentions and uses of the site change, but still, the core of the site is photography, getting comments and learning from them. I'm really sorry you've lost thrill of what DPC is really supposed to be!
Hope ya don't go join a Home improvement site or something, lol
