I just pulled this from the challenge, in favor of an entry in the Fashion challenge.
This is my first attempt into the duotone arena.
Just was wondering what people thought.
Thanks in advance.

I actually started this thread just to show two pics from my trip to Ape Cave. I thought I'd do them in duotone in honor of the challenge (they would have been pure B&W otherwise as there wasn't a lot of color to them). It did turn into an outtake thread, but with the challenge being a free study, it's probably no different than any other thread showing off pics. |

No disrespect, but I don't think this one is a duotone.
Nice capture, though. |

"WOW"..... Has everyone see how the amount of entries has increaded in this challenge. It is currently at 543.....
I am so looking forward to viewing every entry, so that I can comment on, as well as vote. One can only learn by looking at the best, and also incourage the ones that need incouraging.....
Good luck to everyone..... |

Something I as playing with to work on my duotone technique. I took it the week before the challenge started. It is not anything like what I entered though.
Good luck to all 500+ contestants!

I agree Sherpet!! I just hope everyone isn't overly critical on whether photos meet the challenge or not. Either way, I still can't wait to look at everyone's submissions. Is it 9pm PST yet?? :-) |

Even though there are now 550 entries in the Duotone challenge, it obviously makes the competition stiffer than the Fashion challenge. I have a feeling we're going to see some great stuff. No matter how my entry does, this challenge has been very educational. I learned a new technique that could really save a lot of my old photos that I thought looked like crap in color.

Maybe not, but I would still vote it pretty high in the challenge:)

One feels rather helpless here... One knows one has a wonderful image, but one also knows it lacks the WOW factor that a good percentage of these images will have, so one feels doomed to a mid-5's finish.
I just hope, for the sake of my already-ragged sanity, that "true" duotones don't take a backseat in this challenge to far-fetched "interpretations" of what constitutes a duotone... I had entered this thinking it was a challenge that would reward a specific area of technical skill, and boy, I worked HARD on it (7 versions AFTER the initial post-processing, cropping, etc).
Pay me no mind, I don't know what my point is. Let the games begin.

I'm pretty intimidated by the quality I'm seeing in these outtakes. I was rather pleased with my first attempt at duotones but have now lost that.
I've decide to vote for all the images in duotones. In my experience the smaller challenges get more votes so I'll leave fashion to those intimidated by the shere volume on Duotones.

Actually you are right...the building itself was selected out of the image and processed as a duotone using red and yellow with red/orange filter of 24% applied then merged back into the image. So the bottom is green grass as shot and the sky and stuff surrounding the main building is as shot. Only the building itself in this version is duotone. |

I wasn't planning on entering, but I had taken this picture this week, so last minute I played with it to see how it might look duotone, and because I'd never done one before.
I was tempted to enter it--I would have made the deadline, barely--but decided against it mainly because I didn't want to be distracted by a score this week from other things!
I'd love to hear any comments, good or bad. This version was not exactly the basic editing legal version--there was a bit of the dog's pillow showing in the lower left which I've cloned out.
