Oh no Karen, that's OK, I wasn't digging at you or anything. Even if you took a comment out of context or whatever, it made me think about how easily that could be done given the diversity of backgrounds on this board. I figure better to apologise just in case than to wound someone with my words. Especially as I am not submitting, I think it's important that people know how much I appreciate the opportunity to look at and consider their efforts and how I am trying to be constructive not discouraging in my comments. |

Terry, I must be daft: what do you mean? Was this a comment you rec'd (not mine), or are you commiserating?

Thanks hokie for those web-sites. The one I looked at a little bit is photosig.com. I actually saw some images today. Just kidding gang but their best pictures were something to look at. I know they have bigger images and probably a lot of help from photoshop. I hope to be that good someday. I like looking at excellent photos, and then maybe I can get some good ideas on how to compose them. I also noticed that one person was using my dream camera, it's the top of the line Canon digital and it costs $2400 plus. It has a quick shutter for I like to do action pictures. So come, on out there in Internet land, send me the camera, or the money to get that nice new camera that I need. |

Kavey, thanks a lot for taking the time, your comment on my picture make me more sure about an impression I had about something in my picture that I could try to avoid a little , And I probably could have in that case. So that comment was really apreciated ... I will try to do the same during the week .... Lionel

So Spiderman on your Canon Eos-d60, do you ever use your fast shutter of 4000 a sec.? When I use my shutter at 1500 there has to be a lot of light and the image is still somewhat dark. I tried opening and closing my aperture but I still get the same affect at best? My camera seems to do best around 1000 a sec. shutter speed. I need more speed for I dislike blurred subject movement, even if some people like motion trails, I like a focused and a clear picture.

I was just thinking about something and thought I might see what you guys think. As I go through the shots it is important that the pictures fit the category, but it isn't THE most important thing by any means. The only shots that get my top votes are those that are just great pictures. You might have a picture that fits the challenge and is technically sound, but what makes a great photo for me is all around appeal. Does anyone have any idea what I mean? I'm getting several comments about how my picture is good but doesn't focus on the pencil enough. The way I see it is that the topic is just a starting point. To have someone actually say that "in an appropriate challenge I would go as high as 8 but since the challenge is about photographing a pencil I thik the pencil should be the heart of the picture" just seems a little odd to me. (I appreciate all comments so please don't be offended if this is your comment *grin*) That was exactly the opposite of my thoughts on this challenge. I was trying to think of a way to incorporate a pencil into a shot that wouldn't shout "this is a photograph of a pencil!" When I have a picture I think "what would happen if I put this on photosig?". If you have a shot that will only do well in a particular challenge and doesn't stand on its own as a nice photograph then what's the point? What are you really learning? |

not yet - so far i've done most of my shooting in AP mode, so I can control my DOF - if/when the sun comes back out on a week-end, i'll see if i can bracket some shots at different speeds and post them for you |

Lionelm, you're welcome. Of course, I don't know which photo is yours so I can't think what I wrote, but that's as it should be. I am glad it was useful to you. It's taking a lot of time out of my week to comment all the photos. I am really pleased that someone is finding the comments useful.
Occasionally, I think about why I am doing this - there are a number of comments I see in the forums where posters say that if they get a low score/ less than wonderful comment that they will look up the profile of the person who made it and if they haven't submitted themselves they will disregard it as having no value. :(
But mostly I am enjoying it and it's great to admire all the wonderful entries each week. |

ok that would be great, thanks--I am looking at your type of camera because you can add lenses and I need the speed for better action pictures

Now to get back to the subject of pencils, I could see from the pictures that people wanted to express in their own way. The theme was just to have a pencil image and that's the way that I voted. I think I commented to someone that they would be in trouble, for what other people thought about the subject matter of pencils. Just keep doing what you're doing if that's what you like. You might not win first prize here but you'll satisfy yourself. I keep hoping that one-day people at this web-site will see what the person is trying to put across and vote accordingly. |

I also want to remind people when voting to remember the challenge: physically have a pencil(not how much or whether the photo was about pencils) and use CREATIVITY. People should be voting according to that. Don't take off points if there was 3/4 of a pencil. Did you see it or not? Don't take off points if it is not something you would expect a pencil to be/do. Remember it was about creativity.Look at the technical aspects, the focus, the DOF, etc...

I haven't voted anyone down on not meeting the challenge and in future I NEVER will again (Got burned badly myself last week; so been there, done that :) It is silly to expect ONE WHOLE PENCIL. I do expect, however, to see some sensible context. Contrary to what some people are responding to me in PMs that should not impair the creativity. Just because the challenge calls for creativity doesn't necessarily mean anything goes, in my book at least. I have seen some decent pictures but I had to say that pencil was only there because the challenge called for one and it made not a whole lot of sense to me. That said, I have seen many excellent, creative shots where the inclusion of a pencil made perfect sense or added a fun twist. Also seen a number of shots where the pencil was used effectively as a metaphor. Really have enjoyed voting on this challenge and could clearly see that some people went to great length to create their pencil scenario. Bravo! |

the way i think meeting the challenge should be voted is if there is a pencil in it , you met the challenge. i would never count off because i thought the challenge wasnt met to my expectations. i will vote higher if it is a creative way of meeting the challenge. after all this is a photography site. i use the majority of my voting for the actual technical and creative aspects of the photo.
if we were to be so specific as to what is required from a shot, we would have 180 photos of essentially the same thing. there needs to be room for interpritation. that is where the best shots come from in my opinion.
