I'm confused a little bit. THis happens often, but it wears off after a while, usually.
I don't get why the Duotones and the Fashion are exclusive challenges. I am starting to use the challenges as exactly that: Challenges for me to take a picture of something I would not have thought to take a picture of. This means reading up on lighting, re-arranging my living room, or staring at a piece of wood for an extra five minutes wondering if it would look better with a blue channel b/w conversion or a red.
So when i got ready to upload my entry for the fashion challenge, after i already submitted on for the duotone, i was shocked to find out i couldn't. This seemed to make sense for the Virtues/Sins challenges, you either had to pick the devil or angel on your shoulder, but what is the reasoning behind the duotone and fashion cahllenges being exclusive?
And should I create another member name so I can submit in each? or is against the rules? |

You can only submit to one of the basic editing challenges, it was created to reduce the amount of entries.

Open challenges were split like this last year. There were too many entries in individual open challenges, so it was decided to split them into two *exclusive* challenges instead (i.e. you are only allowed to enter one open and one members challenge at one time)
That's why they're exclusive... :)
This resulted in a lower number of entries per challenge.
Oh, and you're not allowed to create duplicate member names. |

Thanks for the replies!
I understand the need to cut the number of entries, but with the current challenges, there is 462 duotones and like 80 something for the fashion. When there are two decidedly different challenges such as these, with photo turnout for each being as drastically different as they are, why not allow the, probably, very few who would submit to both to do so? it doesn't seem as though there is going to be a HUGE jump in submissions.

A) this one was a fluke, the two challenges are usually much more balanced than this
B) how would they have known this imbalance would happen before hand?
C) why try to improve the number situation, then go change your mind?
D) imagine all the complaints if that was possible with some challenges, but not with others? Hardly very fair, huh?
Perhaps exclusive challenges aren't the best solution, but they're all we have at present, and they have helped.
(Edited to fix grammar oopsy which bear music just had to highlight ... hmpfh!)

Just to be a little flippant here, predicting this particular imbalance was a slam-dunk; practically everyone enjoys messing around with B/W conversions, but the idea of "shooting fashion" is scary to an awful lot of people. I just wish there was something or someone fashionable in my life :-)

Robert, you could have done a self portrait to show how NOT to do it, or call it "fashion-protest" or some such title *g* |

I am relatively new here so this may be something has been brought up many times before.
However, why as a paid Member am I being restricted in my participation. I can understand for non-paying members.
And i will agree, that this duotone challenge was a no brainer in terms of number of submissions. Its essentially a two color free study, everybody loves that.
And i do think there is a bit of fairness in making people choose sometimes. Sins/Virtues is a great example. Your choice to participate in one versus the other is as much a decision in the creative process as what to create within that challenge. it is the same challenge from two different perspectives.
Duotones/fashion? Two completely different approaches to creating these pictures and one shouldn't have to choose which they don't get to participate in. The choice has nothing to do with the image that they will create.
unless you're doing a b/w fashion shot.

Like this has been stated before,...

And, frankly, as a member we have alot more freedoms than a guest.
The exclusive challenges are there for the non-member. But, I do see a good point here. As a member, why don't we have this benefit? A non member gets the crumbs of a members meal.
Letting members only participate in both exclusive challenges? Now theres a coup.
