yesterday a lot of people were good enough to enlighten me as to what RAW mode was on the camera I have owned now for more than a year.

now I am faced with yet another mystery...

when i shoot in RAW mode, it records a second image that is a lot lighter than the original. does anyone know what this is?

This question and any of the answers will be published in my upcoming book "Sickdog's Stupid Questions About The Camera He Paid Too Much For".

your input would be greatly appreciated.

Don't remember exactly what it was but logically the lighter image should be the JPEG associated with the RAW file. This is a copy of the file that the camera process for you just as if you were shooting JPEG's.

you mean it still records the pic as it would have taken it outside of RAW mode?

if its in a raw+jpeg mode, most likely. I cant give a definite answer, as ive never had a Sony camera that wrote raw files.

thank you. i think i have a good idea now of whats going on.

not a lot of people use a sony on this site but whenever i've asked for advice on it, the members here have been extremely helpfull.

mind you, i have nothing but good things to say about sony. for one thing, they're durable. most of my shots this last year have been at punk rock shows in oakland. it's had beer spilled on it and was once used to bludgeon someone in a moshpit...

ah memories.

thank you for your answers!
