Habit. For water, I often use Av for motion blur - I just bump up the aperture in 2 stop increments and keep shooting. That way I have a variety of motion blur to pick from. Its the same result, just a different way to get there. I use M when I know the exact DOF I need and the shutter speed I need and change the ISO to get what I want.
My husband and I both drive my son to school but I take the back roads and he takes the main roads. We both get there in about 18 minutes but he doesn't mind the traffic lights and I like the scenic route. Same result just different ways to get there.
I did think of another time I use Tv though. In lower lighting situations, using my 100-400L. When shooting I sometimes stop paying attention to changing light situations. Since its heavy and slow, if the shutter speed is dropping I set Tv to 1/250 and pray I have enough light for the DOF I need. I have handheld it as slow as 1/100 but I don't like risking the shots and Tv makes the most sense.
Using manual for motion blur I have quick and easy access to both aperture and shutter speed. I can get the DOF I want and quickly move the shutter speed up or down a couple stops (slightly over or under exposing) to increase or decrease motion blur. I don't use Tv often enough to be comfortable in my ability to make adjustments quickly. Its my lack of skills and knowledge, that's all... |

I am not experienced but what the heck
I use Tv 80% (I am shaky)don't forget you can see what appeture its going to use so you can adjust it to suit the shot you are trying to achieve.
