There is a photography contest with the Carnivale 2006 theme you can enter if you get good shots. They are accepting submissions from the 26th of Feb to the 20th of April.
Contest
Other than that, as everyone said, just wander the backstreets. Have a portable hard drive with you or a ton of cards.
Decent coffee from Venice is Caffe del Doge.
Have fun!!!
By the way, I like this guy's pictures:

I gave all my tips to Nasti when we were both in DPC Fanatics Chat so you already have those - can't wait to see all your pics when you get back!

I'll translate the important info for you later today and PM it or email it to you tonight. That way you'll have it when you bring home your masterpieces and can submit a shot. |

We just got back from Venice, it is such an amazing and beautiful city! Thanks for all your great tips, they helped a lot! I took over 1500 photos there so it will take a while to sort through them all and get them up, but I will do it as soon as possible and post the link here. |

Thanx Ron :)
Riponlady, that was a very good tip about getting up at 5:30 in the morning to go to St. Mark's square! We did it and mixed in amongst the professional photographers shooting there. There were National Geographic photographers there too, very impressive! Those guys walk around with equipment! Lenses sticking out of every nook and cranny :) And you were right, they didn't mind us shooting their models at all. We actually got hold of a couple of models ourselves and set them up in positions we wanted. Amazing shooting there in the morning light, I have so many good shots I don't know where to begin :) The funny thing is that all the masqueraded models are either German or French, no Italians at all. They come to Venice every year and parade around getting photographed and then they give you a card so you can send them the photos you took of them. They don't ask for money at all, they just liked being photographed.
Here is one I have ready so far:

wait I think it worked. Editing my own stupidity.
Here it is in full in case you didn't get it all:
Gary,
From what I've seen uploaded to the competition so far, you're a winner.
Here is what you need to do: You are allowed to enter TWO pictures. They can be color or black and white, doesn't matter. Theme NEEDS to be the Carnivale. Photos must be submitted in JPEG format. The FILE SIZE needs to be between 400K and 2.5 MB. Anything smaller or larger they will not accept.
They accept alterations but prefer photos that look real, no "digital art".
PHOTO DIMENSIONS: This is important...Each side of your photo MUST be more than 1500 pixels in length.
YOu have until April 20th to submit the photos.
out of all submissions, they will choose 50. The 50 photos will be published on the website May 5th to July 3rd. They'll be open to online voting at that point. 10 winning photos will be chosen July 18th and the winners notified by email. First place is a Canon EOS 350D with kit lens. 2nd and 3rd place winners get a Canon Digital IXUSi compact digital cam. The rest of the winners get a Canon Printer Pixma.
They reserve the right to use your photo in basically anything they want to promote the contest or for any publication. If they publish your photo in something, you are not going to receive money but they will of course list you as the photographer.
go to this website to register:
//212.239.21.218/fotografavenezia06/Homepage.aspx
Click "Iscrizione al Concorso Fotografico il Carnevale Veneziano"
At the bottom of the next page, click "Vai alla modulo iscrizione"
Nome = Name
Cognome = Last Name
Indirizzo = Adress
Cap = zip
Citta'= City
Provincia - Code for your region or city. For example, I'm "NJ" for New Jersey
Nazione = Country
Data di Nascita = Birthdate
Telefono fisso - Home number
Telefono mobile - Cell Phone Number
Check the box that says "Acceto il regolamento in ogni sua parte"
Check the second box that begins with "Autorizzo "
Click "Conferma"
On the next page you will see under Pass Due, the BROWSE button. That is where you will insert your FIRST photo or ONLY photo. When you have loaded the file, click "Conferma".
That will take you to the next page and you can upload another photo.
From there, I can't help you since I didn't have pictures to load. There will probably be a review page and a final submit button that will probably either say "Invia" or "Conferma".
If you have any problems let me know.

WOW, WOW, WOW and WOW. Excuse my shouting, but these shot are great. Wonderful. I'm waiting to new photos published, so please tell us when you do it.
The first one (of the mirror) is the one I like most. It's superb. But all of them are superior.
Nice job.

Thanks for the translation into English Robert, I will definitely enter the competition. The difficult part will be choosing two photos to send, there are so many to choose from! |
