i'm deciding b/w Nikon D70s and Canon Rebel XT (350D)

i've read from a review that the D70s does not shoot in ISO 100. is that a significant concern?

i need help. would greatly appreciate to have your comments on these cameras

ISO 100 has not been a concern for me. The thing that made me choose the D70 vs the Canon that was available at the time was how it felt. I think the best thing you could do is to go to a camera store and get your hands on them and see which one gives you the best vibes.

They are both good cameras - you won't go wrong either way.

I would be more concerned over the D70's terrible noise levels at high ISOs.

Never missed ISO 100.

they are both excellent cameras the only thing that would consern me is that nikon was having problems and are no longer making film cameras so if thats the case i dont know hoiw thier digital end is actually doing and if hevan forbit they go under its going to be a pain if it ever needs to get serviced, or you eventually want to upgrade the body but have all nikon lenses and they dont fit canon (or what ever brands body) just something to consider - i dont know what their satndpoint is on their digitals but just something that conserns me

What does eliminating film cameras have to do with the financial stability of a company?

35mm and particularly consumer film is dead and buried. Kodak digital sales surpassed film for the first time...Ummm...KODAK!

Remember all you film buffs..I said 35mm film and consumer film is dead...not all film. But..considering the 35mm market is the bulk of the film indsutry..I would say it will be hard for other film formats to last much longer.

Plus, Nikon is still keeping a consumer film camera and a pro body film camera for the few that still want or need a film camera. No need to make 20 film bodies for a market that is dead.

I don't understand this post at all. There are a half dozen camera makers that will go under before Nikon and that will drive camera buyers over to thos that are left...like Nikon and Canon.

Plus, Nikon is a brand like no other...if in say..a hundred years Nikon would go under....any company in their right mind would snap them up just for the brand recognition.

Don't worry..I think the only thing that will endanger a Nikon purchase is simple technological obsolescence that hits all consumer electronics....Canon...anybody.

I don't think Nikon are in any danger of going under. It'll be interesting to see what Sony does about their sensors though now that they're making their own DSLRs.

I outright said i didn't know how thier finances on their digatal end are doing, but i was just saying to heir(sp?) on the side of caution

I think you want "err" there. But I have to agree with the other posters, I'm not worried about Nikon going down the tubes any time soon. I think ending the 35mm film line signals commitment to the dSLR line rather than the opposite.

thanks guys, for the input. i think, i'll follow joebok's suggestion here of going to the store and have a feel of the cameras. :)

anyway, i've also received a comment that photos by nikon cameras look a bit more real than canon's. and then, i've learned that in my area, nikon's maintenance service isn't good and will have to ship the unit to Singapore for repairs and wait for 2 months.

My son has the Nikon D70 and I have the Canon 300d and he produces way better images than me...hang on a sec...that could be because I stink and he excels......

Anyway, Singapore usually excels at everything, if that's your only concern. I equate it to Sim city..it's designed perfectly and works perfectly. If only the rest of the world could get in line with it.

All that said, when I tested my son's camera I was a 'liddle' bit envious:)

The D70 is an amazing camera and has earned a good deal of respect over that last year. Just look at the images it has produced on this site alone and you'll get a accurate idea of what it can do. ISO 200 was perfectly fine and held well for me up to ther midranges.

The feel of that camera is so good and for whatever it costs these days...you won't regret it.

On a personal note, I didn't like the feel of the XT a single bit but it's specs are really nice.

I'll just chime in really quickly here. I considered both, until I picked up the 350xt ... then I knew I had to get the d70. I also considered a 20d, as I had a couple of Canon lenses already, but still opted for the d70 based on ergonomics alone.
